The Natural Stone Institute (NSI) is a trade association representing every aspect of the natural stone industry. The current membership exceeds 2,000 members in over 50 countries. The association offers a wide array of technical and training resources, professional development opportunities, regulatory advocacy, and networking events. Two prominent publications—the Dimension Stone Design Manual and Building Stone Magazine—raise awareness within the natural stone industry and in the design community for best practices and uses of natural stone.
Professional Summary
The Sr Lab Tech plays a pivotal role at the Natural Stone Institute (NSI), overseeing the operational execution and sales of laboratory services. This encompasses direct oversight of self-performed testing services, management of subcontracted services, and overall scheduling of laboratory resources. The role requires active management of Laboratory Technicians, ensuring adherence to safety standards with compliant PPE, and efficient day-to-day laboratory operations in both climate-controlled and field environments. The Assistant Laboratory Manager is also responsible for generating accurate quotations, preparing detailed reports, and maintaining adherence to laboratory standards and customer expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Direct and oversee the work of laboratory technicians to enhance team performance and professional development.
· Prepare quotations for laboratory services, ensuring compliance with standards and satisfaction of project specific requirements
· Prepare detailed and accurate technical reports for completed laboratory services, ensuring compliance with standards and necessary reviews and co-signatures.
· Apply technical knowledge in materials science, petrography, and natural stone to testing and consulting services.
· Ensure all laboratory operations adhere to the documented Standard Operating Procedures, customer requirements, regulatory authorities, and accrediting organizations.
· Foster effective communication within the team and with external stakeholders to ensure service effectiveness and meet customer requirements.
· Conduct site inspections and provide consulting services.
· Manage projects from planning through execution, emphasizing quality assurance and safety protocols.
· Oversee technical records, formal reports, work orders, and job flow.
· Review vendor contracts, laboratory data, and calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance.
· Develop and implement strategies for business development and enhancement of laboratory services.
· Ensure compliance with ISO 17025 and other relevant standards Including:
· Development and maintenance of Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures documents.
· Maintaining required ISO 17025 internal and external audit schedules.
· Oversight of required corrective actions resulting from audits.
· Actively participate as a representative for the NSI in various national and international technical committees, including: · ASTM International Committee C18 on Dimension Stone· ISO/TC 327 on Natural Stones
Educational and Professional Requirements:
· AS or BS degree in geology, mineralogy, civil engineering, architecture, construction, or a related discipline.
· At least 5 years of laboratory in a research or industrial environment.
· Proven expertise in experimental design and research plan execution.
· Experience in petrographic examinations of construction materials.
· Direct experience in conducting testing of natural stone and related products per relevant ASTM, ANSI, CEN, and ISO test protocols.
Preferred Experience:
· At least 2 years of management experience in a research or industrial lab environment
· 4 year degree (Bachelor)
· Certifications: Registration with License to Practice as a Professional Geologist (PG), Professional Engineer (P.E.), or Registered Architect is highly desirable.
Skills and Abilities:
· Strong project management and technical consultation skills.
· Expertise in laboratory safety, quality assurance, materials science, and ISO 17025 compliance.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), laboratory information management system, Association Membership Management, and Inventory Control software.
· Effective technical writing capability.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of professional interactions with colleagues, NSI members, and other stakeholders.
