Description of Work:
Burke County Health Department has an opening for a Public Health Nurse II. The primary purpose of this position is to improve the health of the community through nursing interventions. This position will plan and work in all clinics that he/she is qualified to work in and will be trained accordingly by the State and Local Staff. This position will work with the clinical nursing supervisor to establish program goals, policies, procedures, and guides. This nurse will receive or have specialized training in Tuberculosis screening and treatment, Sexually Transmitted Infection screening, physical assessment and treatments, Communicable Disease surveillance, investigation, and control including Outbreak events, COVID screening and vaccination, and Immunization assessment and delivery.
Considerable knowledge of Public Health Nursing, Social Determinants of Health, and Health Equity are beneficial to support individual ability to engage tactfully with others, implement cultural humility into nursing interventions and elevate program goals and skill in the application of nursing theory and practice is required as well as the ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in decision making.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
Minimum Education and Experience – Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and one year of Public Health Nursing experience; or Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience including one year of Public Health Nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preference- Is for an applicant with Spanish speaking experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications - A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing.
Administering the Class - Individuals employed in a local Health Department without a B.S. Degree which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or a Master’s in Public Health, will be required to complete the “Introduction to Principles and Practices of Public Health Nursing” course within one year of employment as a condition of continued employment in accordance with Health Services Commission Rule. Experience in a field of nursing that is closely related to the anticipated work assignment can be substituted for Public Health experience for hiring purposes; however, the employee will also be required to complete the “Introduction to Principles and Practices of Public Health Nursing” course or objectively demonstrate an adequate understanding of Public Health practice within 1 year of employment.
