The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) is a public benefit corporation and politic arm of New York State, whose mission is to develop, maintain, and operate the infrastructure of Roosevelt Island. As part of this mandate, RIOC operates and maintains several facilities including the Cultural Center, Sportspark, and the Motorgate Garage; as well as other outdoor spaces such as Firefighter’s Field, Southpoint Park, and Lighthouse Park, among other facilities and locations. Infrastructure operations also includes the Aerial Tramway, and a free Red Bus Service that stops at various points on Roosevelt Island; and a Public Safety Department that serves as the community’s first responders in coordination with the New York City Police Department. RIOC’s workforce is also comprised of union workers from Local 210, 32BJ, PSOB, and other administrative staff.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation is currently seeking a qualified Aquatics Manager to oversee all aspects of the pool at Sportspark. Sportspark is an indoor multi-use facility which includes a basketball gym, fitness center, and swimming pool. The facility operates seven days a week in an effort to best serve the community through physical activity. Although the Aquatic Manager’s primary responsibility will be in overseeing all staffing, safety procedures, and programming of the pool area, under direction of the Director of Sportspark and Programming, the Aquatics Manager will also play a critical role in the overall operation of the building.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and oversee all aspects of Sportspark’s Aquatic program, including pool operations, lifeguard management and training, scheduling, and swim classes.
- Run monthly in-services to help lifeguards with continuing education.
- Be the point person for all members regarding aquatics questions.
- Enforce facility & pool rules in order to prevent problems and/or injuries.
- Maintain concentrated observation of the pool area and its users in order to quickly identify and respond to emergencies with efficiency.
- Conduct interviews and manage the hiring process for all lifeguards.
- Maintain accurate records for all ARC certifications and alert staff when they need to renew.
- Oversee and develop Assistant Aquatics Manager’s.
- Safely execute water/land rescues and provide emergency medical care as necessary, including but not limited to administering emergency first aid and CPR/AED.
- Provide medical treatment the event of non-life threatening and/or minor injuries to bathers.
- Communicate with fellow lifeguards, bathers, and other users to help ensure a safe swimming environment.
- Ensure that the pool area and deck are neat and tidy to prevent trips, slips, and falls; also ensuring that the deck is clear for lifeguards to maneuver around the perimeter of the pool.
- Daily cleaning and scrubbing of the pool deck.
In addition to their primary responsibilities, the Aquatics Manager is required to perform secondary responsibilities. (Note that secondary responsibilities should never supersede the lifeguards’ primary responsibilities).
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Aquatics Manager may be required to perform light cleaning including but not limited to light cleaning and mopping/squeegeeing of the pool area and locker rooms/restroom areas.
- Complete accurate and descriptive incident/accident reports and other pool related paperwork as necessary.
- Routine testing of the pool's chlorine and pH levels and recording the data on the Chemical log sheet.
- Act as a general information point for all bathers and users of the swimming pool area; responding to short inquiries as needed and positively representing the organization.
- As the head of our Aquatics Center, you are the EYES and EARS of our pool. As such, the Aquatics Manager is required to immediately contact management for any member or staff incidents.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current Lifeguard Certification (preferably from the American Red Cross).
- Current CPR/AED Certification (preferably from the American Red Cross).
- ARC certifications (LGT, WSI, LGT-I) and a degree in a related field or comparable experience is required.
- Certified Pool Operator preferred.
- Knowledge of the NYC Board of Health pool regulations and requirements.
- Considerable knowledge in planning, organizing, and implementing Aquatics programs.
- Excellent staff supervision skills; ability to create positive working relationships with employees and the public.
- Demonstrated ability to assist children and others in the development of swimming skills.
· Ability to communicate clearly with all fellow staff and supervisors.
· Ability to work weekends.
· Dependable and able to supervise activities and special events.
· Well-groomed and properly attired, professional & positive attitude.
· Strong communication and listening skills.
· Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and remain concentrated.
· Ability to lift up to 35lbs.
· Capable of motivating a team and leading by example.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate must have a broad range of skills, but above all, they must be curious, flexible thinkers who love learning new things and tackling challenges daily. In addition, the preferred candidate should possess the following:
1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education, and 4 years of experience overseeing pool operations with three (3) to six (6) months of related training, or equivalent combination of education or experience acceptable.
