Job Duties
A multi skilled person dedicated to assisting in designated aspects of medical practice including administrative and clinical procedures, as well as expediting patient care by documenting all provider/patient interactions in the medical record under the supervision and responsibility of a RN/LPN/APRN/or licensed provider.
Essential Functions
- Take patient’s vital signs. Observe and report patients’ signs or symptoms.
- Participates as an active care team member in the coordination of patient care.
- Maintains patient scheduling functions, and sets patient appointments through established guidelines.
- Assist with patient examinations, procedures, and treatments. Maintain safe patient environment while maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Performs aseptic procedures. Administer basic first aid, and basic wound care.
- Receives and directs messages, (electronic, in person and telephone calls) to the appropriate personnel. Makes contacts to other departments, physicians, patients and other outside organizations as necessary for the departmental/practice operations.
- Correctly document all entries in the medical record functions, to include responding to and handling other tasks, as directed.
- Collect and perform routine laboratory specimens and procedures as directed by the provider.
- May perform additional tasks related to phlebotomy and EKG after completion of phlebotomy or EKG certification course and upon validation of competency of the skills.
- Will not perform any duties related to medication administration or review.

Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, or unusual situations. Must be capable of dealing with periodic cyclical workload pressures and levels of responsibility. Required to make independent judgments without supervision. Must be able to make generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria. Must have the adaptability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure. Requires the ability to work with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assignments to work independently as well as a collaborative team member.
- Knowledge of ambulatory health care or related health care field.
- Ability to provide dynamic customer service using various techniques including positive language, calming presence, attentiveness, clear communication, and patience.
- Ability to accurately record/transcribe information.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and accepted abbreviations.
- Basic computer literacy and arithmetic skills.
- Attention to detail and quality of work.
- Ability to work collaboratively with all members of health care team and other clinical services.
Experience Requirements
1 year Certified Nursing Assistant preferred or
1 year Emergency Medical Technician preferred
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED required
Certification/Licensure
Training: CNA: Graduate of an approved CNA program required or
Training: EMT: Vocational training and graduation from an approved Emergency
Medical Technician school, an approved military EMT program may be substituted. required
Basic Life Support (BLS) required at time of hire
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) required at time of hire or
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) required at time of hire
