Position Summary
The Kitchen Manager works closely with the Director of Operations and the Facility staff to oversee the successful operations of the Kitchen at Bet Shalom. Following the policies and procedures outlined in the Kitchen Manual, the Kitchen Manager serves as the liaison among all stakeholders who utilize the Kitchen at Bet Shalom for the purposes of community building, life cycle events, education, and any other activity that serves the mission of the synagogue.
Responsibilities
Kitchen Management
- Coordinate scheduling with the Director of Operations and the rest of the facility team to ensure productive planning and implementation time for all events.
- Coordinate with facility staff and Bet Shalom families for the effective preparation and service of meals in support of life-cycle events.
- Coordinate with local chefs to prepare and serve meals, snacks, or other food-related items at Bet Shalom.
- Plan menus in coordination with professional staff, clergy and chefs including all dietary restrictions.
- Work closely with the Kitchen Committee to plan and coordinate annual cooking events (e.g. Hamantaschen baking) by the members of the committee.
- Ensure kitchen and kitchen storage area cleanliness and ongoing maintenance and repairs of kitchen equipment.
- Order, shop for and track kitchen inventory including food supplies for events, as prescribed by chefs hired to cook meals at Bet Shalom and kitchen based programming, such as Kugel Kindness, baking activities by the Kitchen committee, etc, paper good and related items such as tablecloths, centerpieces, dishes and serving pieces.
- The Kitchen Manager is expected to “own” the kitchen manual, not only upholding the policies and procedures contained therein, but also making recommendations about changes and improvements to kitchen protocols.
- Recruit and hire temporary part-time staff to help with the preparation, service, and cleanup of spaces for food events at Bet Shalom.
- Prepare food for events, such as Kabbalat Panim, when necessary.
- Responsible for keeping catering manual up to date and submitting to accounting for final amounts to be invoiced for events not covered by membership at Bet Shalom.
- Have a thorough knowledge of food cost, labor cost and inventory functions.
- Flexibility of hours is crucial as this person may work days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Ensure that emergency procedures are well-established, communicated, and implemented.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, but not required.
- Minimum three year’s work experience in a related field.
- Commitment to the principles of Reform Judaism.
- Kitchen License

- A professional manner and calm disposition, with the ability to work under occasional stressful situations
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: Up to $30,000.00 per year
Expected hours: 10 – 25 per week
