Job summary
The Technician “B” will be responsible for performing mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance of bus vehicles; will include inspecting, servicing, troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, overhauling and preventative maintenance on all vehicles. This position must maintain ASE Certifications in Brakes, Suspension & Steering and A/C or HVAC. This position will be required to work at a minimum of 85% productivity.
Position Objectives:
- Work all work orders assigned.
- Perform all safety and courtesy inspections.
- Perform assigned mechanical repairs and preventative inspections.
- Follow all service policies and procedures.
- Follows manufacturer's warranty policies and procedures in all warranty work.
- Reviews all manufacturer service bulletins.
- Keep accurate and detailed notes on all repair work orders.
- Maintain and protect all company tools and work stations.
- Returns all special tools/equipment upon job completion or at days end.
- Provides service advisor/writer with necessary parts and labor estimates.
- Agree to continuing education in technical skills during work.
- Keep work area clean at all times.
- Ensures all safety policy and procedures in accordance company and KPA are strictly adhered to.
- May be required to pick up and deliver vehicles.
- Work Independently and perform duties necessary in the field.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager or supervisor.
- May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week as business dictates.
Essential job functions
- Build and assemble mechanical components according to requirements.
- Inspect engines, transmissions etc. and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues.
- Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability.
- Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner.
- Perform thorough maintenance on equipment and systems.
- Clean and apply lubricants to engine components.
- Replenish fluids and components of engines and machinery.
- Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to vehicle users.
- Undertake other duties as assigned (e.g. repair of hydraulic systems, painting vehicles etc.).
- Keep logs of work and report on issues.
- Maintain inventory levels of parts and supplies needed.
Physical Abilities
- Manual dexterity sufficient to grasp power and hand tools.
- Ability to lift 10 pounds on a frequent basis and 50 pounds occasionally.
- Mobility requirements include frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, pulling, pushing, crawling and climbing.
- Use of ladders to no higher than 4 feet.
- Able to stand for long periods of time.
- Able to fit into tight spots, such as under a vehicle or in a far corner of an engine.
Work Environment
- Time is spent inside and outside of vehicles.
- Able to be exposed to various fluids such as oil, brake fluid, cleaning fluid, transmission fluid and other fluids and oils associated with engines and cars.
- Time is spent working outside in both very hot and very cold weather.
- Must be willing to wear gloves and eye and ear protection.
Job Requirements:
Candidate must be a high school graduate or have a GED and 2 to 4 years of automotive experience as a technician. Must have ASE certification in Brakes, Steering & Suspension and A/C or HVAC additional certifications preferred. If not certified in these areas must obtain certification within the first 3 months of employment. Certification must be in area of work performed, Light Duty or Heavy Duty. All candidates must have recognized A/C Certification for recovery and recharge of mobile A/C systems. Candidate must have high level skills in electrical diagnosis and wiring diagram comprehension. Candidate must have a CDL license with Passenger endorsements or able to obtain one within 8 months of employment. Diesel automotive experience and welding experience is preferred.
