POSITION: DON Plastic Surgery ASC
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Medical Director
JOB SUMMARY: Central Scottsdale Surgery Center is one of the Arizona’s premiere outpatient surgical facilities. CSSC is a multi-specialty center with a focus on plastic surgery. It is Medicare certified; State licensed. The Director of Nursing is a registered nurse who oversees the pre-operative area, operating room, and recovery room and acts as the preoperative supervisor for the patient while in these areas. He or she is the patient advocate and assures that quality care is administered by all of the nursing team.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Registered nurses approved and employed by the medical staff must have, on file, their license to practice in the state of Arizona
- 3+ years ASC leadership experience
- Maintain re-licensure requirements
- Pre-Operative, OR, & post-operative experience required
- Obtain current ACLS/BLS course certification

- Provide a safe environment for treating surgical patients from infection
- Assist in providing in-service for all staff members in the following areas:
- Fire safety with drills, infection control, and medical education
PROCEDURAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
PREOPERATIVELY:
- Provide patient and family teaching regarding upcoming surgery
- Complete patient health questionnaire
- Identify patient, assesses patient’s chart for completeness and establish basic interventions for patient care: Review patient history, evaluates patient’s LOC and baseline vital signs, assess patient’s physical status, Check medications ordered, administered, and effects noted, informs surgeon or anesthesiologist of change in patient status, Provide emotional support for patient pre and post op.
ASSIST IN:
- Start IV or heparin lock
- Attach pulse oximeter
- Assist anesthesiologist as follows:
- Applying pulse oximeter
- Applying blood pressure, pulse and cardiac monitors
- Applying oxygen
- Assist technician in draping patient
- Set-up phacoemulsification and other equipment, as necessary
- Gather necessary supplies to assist surgeon, anesthesiologist and OR technician
- Assist in moving patient to recovery room area
- Complete written operative record
POST-OPERATIVELY:
- Assist in escorting patient from operative suite to recovery room while assessing the post-operative status
- Initiate appropriate monitoring utilizing any necessary equipment: 02, suction, EKG, and blood pressure cuff
- Receive report from OR staff and documents care given
- Check patient for level of consciousness, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration every 10 minutes or as frequently as indicated by patient’s condition
- Check dressing every five minutes. Alerts surgeon if bleeding is present. Notes patient’s skin color, skin temperature, and IV state
- DC IV or heparin lock
- Make an entry of any untoward events during nursing care and reports them to the physician in charge
- Record accurately affect intervention and patient’s response
- Involve patient and family members in post-op teaching and planning
- Assist in discharge of the patient:
- Criteria for discharge:
- Taking and retaining fluids
- Vital signs stable
- Patient is alert and orientated
- Anesthesiologist will check patient and write the discharge order
- Escort patient to post-operative area door and transfer the patient to their caregiver
- Assure patient chart is complete, including
- Condition on discharge
- Ambulatory status
- Time and mode of discharge
- Wound and dressing condition
- Discharge information/information sheet
- Assist in cleaning and sterilization of pre/post-op room, supplies, and equipment
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in an on-going quality assurance program
- Write legible notes, which reflect care that is pertinent and concise to the patient’s status
- Communicate effectively, maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships
COMPENSATION: Comprises a combination of salary plus performance-based incentive opportunities. Benefits as per those provided all full-time employees.
