RTG Community Coordinator
Openings at: RTG South and RTG West
Position Description:
Hiring staff for a community-based gun violence prevention program that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. The program is a replication of the evidence-based Cure Violence model.
The program works to prevent gun violence by 1) mediating conflicts that may end in gun violence, 2) changing the mindset of individuals who are most at risk of being victims or perpetrators of violence, and 3) working closely with a broad coalition of local partners to promote a visible community-wide message that shooting is unacceptable behavior.
The program is a replication of the evidence-based Cure Violence model. RTG South implements these strategies within the Bronx 44th Precinct in the catchment area: 166th to 169th Street including the following avenues: Morris, College, Findlay, Teller, Clay and within the Highbridge NYCHA neighborhood. RTG North implements these strategies within the Bronx 48th Precinct in the catchment area: 182nd to 187th Street including the following avenues: Belmont, Cambreleng, Beaumont, Crotona, and Prospect.
The RTG Community Coordinators will be responsible for developing community connections and relationships in the Release the Grip North, Release the Grip South and Release the Grip West site. The RTG Community Coordinators will reports to the BronxConnect Release the Grip Program Supervisor at the respective sites. We are currently looking to fill positions at RTG South and RTG West
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Liaising with community-based organizations and city government to build synergy and expand programmatic offerings.
· Coordinating themed weekends of action geared towards public safety where community organizations and affected populations communicate and collaborate to improve the lives of all New Yorkers.
· Serving as a CMS site’s primary representative to each specific neighborhood, precinct and catchment area.
· Identifying new community groups and public or private initiatives with which to build relationships with and to apply for funding opportunities.
· Coordinating and promoting anti-gun violence workshops and pro-social events where community stakeholders and agencies partner to communicate and deliver services in targeted neighborhoods.
· Working within NYC neighborhoods and populations who may be at increased risk for violence.
· Producing events and managing community coalitions.
· Identify emerging community issues affecting public safety to help guide the site’s response.
· Working alongside City agencies to conduct briefings and community meetings outlining city services to key community and faith leader stakeholders.
· Helping to facilitate CMS hiring panel process including outreach and recruitment for potential site staff and/or participants.
· Creating outreach materials, talking points and presentation materials for CMS site.
· Excellent communication, planning, organizational and multi-tasking abilities.
Qualifications
Looking for an enthusiastic, energetic self-starter with a passion for preventing gun violence, building community and organizing different entities to work together towards a common good. The ideal candidate will have experience in community organizing, an AA degree or higher preferred; significant experience working in a community-based setting and proven community organizing abilities.
He or she will have excellent communication skills (written and verbal); the ideal candidate would be equally at home conversing with youth in the community, community activists, law enforcement personnel, and public officials. Experience working in teams with Credible Messengers is a plus. Knowledge and experience in the relevant communities listed above is a strong plus.
