Position: Switchboard Operator

Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalency.
Experience: Strong customer service and communication skills with previous experience answering telephones preferred.
Responsible to: IS Operations Manager/CIO
Summary:
Answer, respond and route all incoming PBX calls appropriately. Respond to all pertinent safety codes
promptly and in accordance with established procedure.
Duties:
- Responds to all external and internal PBX console calls; routes all calls in accordance with priority and call volume.
- Displays appropriate professional telephone etiquette when responding to all calls.
- Displays good guest relations and positive attitude toward all Hospital visitors, patients and vendors, etc.
- Responds to all emergency calls and safety codes promptly and in accordance with established policy and procedure.
- Responds to questions from visitors and other customers in a professional manner; communicates appropriate information in response to visitor/customer questions.
- Manages physician answering services in accordance with established agreements; responds to patient calls, takes necessary messages for physicians as appropriate.
- Maintain adequate understanding of proper communication techniques and applies to specific departmental requirements.
- Performs admission/registration duties on 11-7 shift, including midnight census reconciliation and dinner/break coverage for registration staff on 11-7 shift.
- Assists with the orientation and training of new Communications staff members as requested.
- Provides feedback to Operations Manager on progress of new staff performance.
- Accepts peer mentoring as appropriate.
- Maintains daily records related to the morgue book, key log, physician messages, and on-call and others as appropriate.
- Issues and logs keys for secure locations.
- Contacts administrative and on-call staff after hours as requested, and in accordance with established protocols.
- Communicates appropriate requests via in-house overhead paging system as necessary and according to Policy & Procedure.
- Communicates from hospital staff to the hospital security and engineering team via radio as requested.
- Responds to all hospital alarms according to established protocol. Responds to emergency disaster procedures promptly by notifying the designated administrative staff. Is thoroughly familiar with the Communications responsibilities for the internal and external disaster policy and procedures.
- Is punctual for work shift and maintains working team environment.
- Adheres to standard safety, conduct, and hospital rules and procedures including mandatory educational requirements.
- Reports procedural and departmental non-compliance immediately to IS Operations Manager/CIO.
- Attends and participates departmental meetings when scheduled.
- Adheres to standard safety practices and job, department, and Columbia Memorial Hospital policies and procedures related to safety.
- Participates in training and development activities in accordance with department and Columbia Memorial Hospital policies and practices.
