HILLSIDE SCHOOL DISTRICT 93
POSITION: CUSTODIAN/MAINTENANCE
Job Focus: Perform custodial/maintenance duties as required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Full-Time Position (Ten OR Twelve-month Year Position)
2. Salary and other benefits as established by the HSSA Collective Bargaining Agreement
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists with the task of providing custodial/maintenance services to a school building, including such duties that may consist of: keeping building, sidewalks, bathrooms, stairwells, hallways, closets, classrooms, and offices cleaned and maintained.
2. Responsible for daily cleaning of kitchen and cafeteria.
3. Vacuum classrooms, offices, empty garbage receptacles, and dust furniture, daily.
4. Clean corridors and dust lockers, after school day, and during the day, when conditions require.
5. Wet mop and disinfect toilet floors daily. Clean drinking fountains, urinals, toilet bowls, mirrors, and other fixtures daily.
6. Clean glass on all classrooms and entrance doors daily.
7. Keep all floors in an attractive and clean condition. Scrub and mop all floors at least twice each year, more often if such is required, to keep floors attractive and in good state of preservation.
8. Clean all whiteboards daily.
9. Assists with the setup and movement of furniture or equipment and supplies.
10. Assist with receiving, distribution, and storage of deliveries (food, milk, supplies, equipment, etc.), made to the school during the day.
11. Ensure that the building is properly heated and ventilated and exercise economy in the use of fuel, water, and electricity.
12. Ensure that walkways, driveways, and steps are free from ice and snow and plow and/or salt blacktop areas, when needed.
13. Keep all grounds free from rubbish and be responsible for cutting the grass, trimming the trees and shrubs, and general maintenance of the lawn and grounds, including upkeep of US and Illinois flags displayed at the school.
14. Ensure parking lot is blocked off from public automobile access during bus arrival and departure, daily.
15. Ensures that, at the end of the day, doors and windows are closed, and lights are turned off within the building, except those left on for safety reasons.
16. Assists with preventative maintenance and building repair functions within the building such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical repairs, and other maintenance which a custodian/maintenance staff should be capable of performing.
17. Be held responsible for all tools, supplies, keys, equipment, and other movable property stored in and/or used in the building.
18. Conduct, during the summer months, an intensive cleaning, and repairing program as scheduled by the Superintendent of Schools or designee.
19. Be respectful to others and courteous to teachers. Maintain friendly relationship with students and be courteous and helpful to visitors.
20. Comply promptly and cheerfully to request made by Building Administration.
21. Observe all Board of Education policies, regulations, administrative rules, and procedures.
22. Guards the confidentiality of all information placed in charge of this office. Breach of this trust shall be grounds for dismissal.
23. Serve as a Substitute Bus Driver (29 Passenger Bus) based upon need and holding a Bus Driver
Endorsement.
24. Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of
Business Services and Operations, Facilitator Coordinator, and/or Building Principal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma.
2. Must hold a valid State of Illinois Drivers’ license and excellent drivers’ record.
3. Preferred, Bus Driver Endorsement
4. Be able to follow both written and oral directions.
5. Be willing to work with and around adults and children.
6. Be able to follow a set of work schedules, and procedures.
7. Have general knowledge of building materials, equipment, tools, and techniques.
8. Must possess basic computer skills.
9. Be willing to learn new skills, and follow directions.
10. Experience in custodial/maintenance duties, preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move at least 50 pounds, or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
