Philadelphia Animal Specialty and Emergency (PASE) is seeking skilled and experienced veterinary technician pursuing a position as the Clinical Educator of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care service in an exceptional hospital environment fostering continued growth and development.

Reports to: ECC Manager
General Job Function: Ensures that PASE ECC employees receive proactive, up to date, and thorough training and support in identified areas while taking an individualized approach when necessary. Identifies trends and opportunities for growth as it relates to the practice of best-in-class medical care, with support from the ECC manager and heads of ECC. Provides feedback on educational and training progress of ECC employees to managers. Provides and organizes didactic training and models for clinical training on appropriate topics. Contributes to the development and revision of medical SOPs as needed, as well as ensuring implementation in conjunction with veterinary technician leads and clinical managers. Provides annual continuing education by means of CE day in the fall for PASE staff members in collaboration with PASE staff managers.
Contributes to the PASE weekly update providing staff with outside resources for CE, medical journals, articles, etc. and leads the monthly online CE journal club supplying articles and insights into relevant topics. Collaboration with administrative and DVM managers to provide monthly staff meetings including follow up on action items. Partners with direct staff managers to execute and enhance our onboarding process and initial training of staff, including hands-on training on different subjects. Performs in-person assessments and hands-on education of LVT interns/externs in the areas of critical care and emergency medicine, providing opportunities for further professional and technical development. Aid staff managers in producing education plans, evaluating employees in their progress and professional growth and tracking results.
Requirements:
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Must hold at least a CVT or be actively in pursuit of licensure.
- Specialty certification (VTS ECC) is preferred but not required
- Experience:
- At least five (5) years of veterinary emergency and critical care experience required in a speciality and emergency hospital
- Experience in management is advantageous, but not required.

- Physical:
- Lifting and or carrying up to 40 pounds to waist height.
- Restraining and walking animals up to 200 lbs.
- Standing and walking on hard surfaces up to 8 hours per day.
- Lift and or carry with assistance animals over 40 lbs.
- Schedule:
- 90% Clinical Duties, 10% Administrative Duties
- 40 hours/week, ideally accomplished with three 12-hour shifts and 4 hours of admin time. While daytime hours will be the standard, the clinical educator will be responsible for overlapping with swing and overnight teams to provide enough support and training to achieve all other goals stated. The amount of time spent with the swing and overnight teams will be established with the ECC manager
- On-call availability to be discussed, additional wages and on-call fee provided for after-hours anesthesia cases.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Follow all responsibilities in the Job Description for an ECC Veterinary Technician.
- Organize and perform technician training within the department. This may include:
- Providing oversight/training to ECC technicians and provide emergency and critical care nursing
- Developing training and assessment materials along with the manager
- Working with the manager to develop and refine the leveling system as it pertains to ECC at PASE.
- Assist technicians of other services with training of ECC related skills
- Manage the service leveling checklist and keep it up to date
- Meet regularly with the ECC manager to provide skills feedback on ECC technicians
- Ensure DEA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards are followed. Commitment to developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to emphasize consistent, safe, efficient, and progressive medicine and workflow. Ensure all new protocols, SOPs, procedures, and policies are communicated effectively to the team in a timely fashion.
- Work with the Head of Emergency Medicine and the Head of Critical Care to improve daily workflow and maintain excellence of morale within the service.
- Participate in all education committee meetings
- Any additional tasks or responsibilities as determined by the Head of Emergency Medicine, the Head of Critical Care and ECC manager.
- Perform a full skill assessment for each new employee within 14 days of their first day of employment.
- At least once monthly meetings with the ECC manager to go through employee skill evaluations and progress.
- Develop regular continuing education opportunities for the ECC staff, including didactics, skill labs, and group discussions.
- The clinical educator is not expected to run all of these themself, but to enlist other technicians and doctors to participate in provided CE
- Provide mentorship to any ECC employees actively pursuing VTS certification
