The Student Health Center (SHC) at Dominican University provides basic clinical and healthcare services to the campus community. The SHC is transitioning from an in-person clinic to a telehealth model with reduced/limited in-person services. The Coordinator/Registered Nurse (RN) works with our telehealth partner (Timely Care) to coordinate the programs, services and select operations of the Student Health Center. The RN’s role includes providing health care within the scope of RN license, promoting self-care for students through health evaluation, direct care, and teaching and counseling. The approach is a holistic one that encompasses the physical, mental, emotional and socio-cultural needs of the student. The ability to multitask and have excellent communication and assessment skills is critical in this setting. The SHC has the responsibility of ensuring a healthy and safe living and learning environment where students can thrive. This position reports directly to the Office of the Dean of Students.
Responsibilities
Clinical
-
Provide health care to Dominican University students and limited emergency care to employees as necessary.

Respond to health related emergencies on campus, including wellness checks for students in resident housing. Follow-up on incidents as appropriate.

Triage student’s health needs and provide advice on self-care comfort measures, assess and determine if referral to Urgent Care, ER, Timely Care or primary care provider is appropriate.

Assess basic and common health needs such as burns, dog bites, wound care, panic attacks, upper respiratory infections, musculoskeletal injuries, and provide appropriate care and follow up within the RN scope of practice.

Maintain confidential medical records for each patient encounter.

Perform CLIA waived diagnostic tests including urinalysis, throat swabs for strep A, hemoglobin, O2 Sat. and glucose monitoring. Implements therapeutic treatment modalities (including medications), and provides appropriate patient education. If lab results require medical treatments including prescriptions, or additional diagnostics, provide referral options - Timely Care, Urgent Care or PCP’s.

Provide education and assessment of reproductive health needs including urine pregnancy testing, and appropriate referrals for birth control, STI screening, and pregnancy services.

Provide TB skin testing for students, necessary documentation and follow-up referrals as indicated; work with Marin County Public Health Dept TB Control Nurse for any positive TB cases.
Administrative

Work collaboratively with the VP or Associate Dean of Student Life to set and enforce policies regarding vaccination requirements of students.

Review requests for medical exemptions from vaccine requirements and determine outcome and required follow-up.

Inform VP of Student Life of any health-related situations affecting or threatening to affect the campus community.

Work in conjunction with community agencies on issues related to public health and community wellness

Plan and coordinate first aid and medical services for graduation.

Manage clinic schedule allowing for maximum access for students.

Maintain accounts with medical and pharmaceutical companies.

Maintains first aid, emergency, medical & office supplies.
Behavioral Health & CARE Team
-
Meet on a regular basis with the University Counseling Services staff to coordinate care and follow-up for students of concern.

Serve as a member of the CARE Team and work with the Counseling Services Trainees, Interns and their supervisor to co-manage students with concurrent medical/psychological issues.

Provide medical/psychological consultation to faculty, RA’s, Student Life Team in regards to health and safety concerns for students within the FERPA/confidentiality mandates.

Counsel and provide emotional support to patients as appropriate.

Assist students with accessing TimelyCare and/or local behavioral health services and resources.
Health Education & Wellness Event Coordination

Develop and disseminate educational materials for Health Center clients.

Integrates patient education and instruction in health maintenance and disease prevention into practice including guidance in nutrition, risk factors, episodic illness, contraception, reproductive, self-care and behavioral health.

Order Narcan and condoms via California Public Health Dept. grants.

Coordinate campus vaccine programs (Influenza, COVID) with Community Health Nursing students and/or outside providers.

Coordinate with Marin County Health & Human Services to provide free STI screening on campus.

Coordinate with local agencies and promote wellness events such as blood drives, smoking cessation, harm reduction programs.
Insurance
-
Assist students in accessing care, medical services, labs or pharmacies using their private insurance.

Provide basic information for students seeking health insurance and how to access insurance resources, plans and coverage.
Risk Management
-
Prepare and disseminate safety notices on emerging health concerns such as Pertussis, Measles, Covid, MRSA, TB, etc.

Work closely with the Housing and Facilities Directors to follow-up on reported safety or health concerns.

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Supervisory Responsibilities
-
Directly supervise nursing student workers in the Health Center in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Interview, hire, and train student employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; address complaints and resolve problems.
Required Qualifications
-
Active California R.N. license.
-
Current CPR Certification.
-
Significant and demonstrated experience as an RN in a healthcare setting.

Ability to work independently and autonomously as an RN.
-
Prior experience as a manager or coordinator in a health care setting. Proficient with current technology and software.

Able to perform and interpret CLIA-waived laboratory tests.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of the organization.

Safety and Security - Observe safety and security procedures; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; use equipment and materials properly.
