Since 1846, our world-renowned passenger vessels have been providing up close boat tours in Niagara Falls, NY, USA to customers near and far. The 2020 season saw the debut of two new, all-electric, emission-free vessels, the first of their kind built in the U.S.
JOB SUMMARY
This position’s primary responsibility involves being part of the Deck crew on the Maid of the Mist vessels voyaging in the Lower Niagara River to the incredible Niagara Falls, providing a superb guest experience in this tourist-based operation.
JOB DUTIES
The safety of the passengers is the utmost importance to the vessel crew. This includes the safe voyage of the vessel making it to and from the falls. Therefore, deckhands receive thorough training in customer service, general safety, First Aid and CPR, line handling, first response training for fires and other emergencies, the vessel’s embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, and maintaining safe vessel conditions.
A deckhand’s job is to assist the captains with securely mooring the vessel to its barge. This entails tying off lines, assisting with putting the boat into the correct position in all weather conditions, preparing the vessel for casting off, securely setting up all embarking equipment, and connecting the electric vessels to the chargers. Securing the vessel to the barge properly is crucial to the safety of the passengers and crew.
A deckhand’s capability to provide the Maid of the Mist passengers with the best possible experience on our vessels. This includes welcoming them onto the vessel, providing them with helpful information about the vessel and operations, having a positive attitude towards all passengers, handling all customer inquiries and complaints in a professional and courteous manner, as well as managing passenger areas effectively.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Requirements:
· Enrollment in federally enforced drug consortium (pre-employment and random) which includes testing for marijuana;
· Successfully complete deckhand training modules and practical training requirements on deck;
· Participate in employee evaluations and complete additional training if requested;
· Maintaining the safety of the vessel and passengers at all times;
· Mooring the vessel securely to its barge under all weather conditions;
· Adhere to a strict run schedule to ensure departures and arrivals are on time;
· Provide an enjoyable and memorable experience, ensuring the safety and comfort of all onboard;
· Exhibit excellent customer service skills at all times on company’s facilities;
· Communicate in an efficient and effective manner with crew members, including Mates and Captains (if necessary);
· Actively participate in team effort of preparing the vessel for operating hours, including lines, electrical chargers, fenders, and cleaning;
· Report to place of work – vessel – at different locations within a one-mile radius at scheduled start time;
· Maintain a clean and safe working environment;
· Conduct routine safety procedures;
· Actively participate in training for emergency response procedures.
Upon Request:
· Conduct appropriate new-hire training on deck, collaborating with senior/lead deckhands and/or mates;
· Complete company-provided CPR and first aid training;
· Assist other departments, such as passenger facility, elevators, or admissions.

· Must be physically fit to perform all maintenance duties and move around all compartments of the vessel routinely
· Ability to work in all-weather environments
· Reliable mode of transportation
Preferred:
· New York Boater Safety Course Certificate
ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS
Sitting, standing, stooping, bending, light lifting, carrying, stairs. All of the ergonomic requirements must be performed without significant risk of injury to oneself or others, or otherwise demonstrate or explain how one can perform essential functions listed above.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to clearly read, speak, and understand English. Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions while working independently. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Background check is required.
