DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for receiving receipts and depositing cash and checks and maintaining routine financial records. Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class receives money over the counter or by mail in payment of bills or fees and issues receipts. Work requires considerable facility in counting money and making change but is performed according to established and defined procedures. Work is checked by the daily reconciliation of monies and by periodic audit of cash records. Employees are responsible for shortages in their own work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Receives cash, checks or money orders over the counter or by mail in payment of bills or fees and issues receipts, records amounts received and balances records against receipts at end of work period; prepares bank deposits.
- Operates numbering machines to stamp registrations; issues registration plates and tabs, licenses or other authorizations in return for fees.
- Gives information and explanation concerning service rendered.
- Operates validating machine, cash registers and other standard office appliances; may operate a personal computer.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES,SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of cashiering.
- Working knowledge of business arithmetic.
- Working knowledge of office procedures, methods and equipment with particular reference to receiving and accounting for the receipt of cash.
- Skill in the operation of validating machines, cash registers and other common office machines.
- Ability to receive cash and make change with accuracy and speed.
- Ability to make rapid and accurate arithmetic computations.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
- Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in receiving sums of money from the public for goods, services, or such things as taxes, licenses or fees.
