Position Description Title: Advocacy Coordinator
Supervised by: Programs Manager
Position Summary: The Advocacy Coordinator is a part-time 40 hours a week position, Monday through Friday 9am – 5pm, non-exempt position responsible for providing screening, referrals, short-term case management and advocacy services for individuals, parents and children exposed to domestic violence. The work site will be primarily at Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) through a partnership developed by the Flourishing Child Tribal Enhancement project. The Advocacy Coordinator will work to coordinate community services on an individualized basis by working collaboratively with referral partners on behalf of participants who are victims of domestic violence.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in social work, psychology, justice or related field of human services from an accredited institution. (May substitute years of direct experience in domestic violence or other related field for years of higher education.)
- Minimum of one year of direct experience in the field of domestic violence, crisis intervention, trauma, criminal justice, sexual assault, stalking and/or advocacy.
- This position requires an ability to work almost entirely independently with little direct supervision at CITC.
- This position requires an ability to work closely with, and represent AWAIC to, the other partners of the Flourishing Child Tribal Enhancement project (these include CITC, Anchorage Community Mental Health Services, and Office of Children’s Services for the State of Alaska), as well as other appropriately involved entities.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and be flexible in a fast paced teamwork environment with integrity, compassion, and the skill to handle sensitive issues in a confidential manner.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills including basic computer skills utilizing AWAIC systems and programs. At minimum, proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word, and Excel.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task and be flexible in a fast paced teamwork environment with the skill to handle sensitive issues in a mature and confidential manner and with integrity and compassion.
- This position requires reliable transportation and a valid Alaska driver’s license.
Preference:
- Professional training or equivalent experience with domestic violence and power based violence issues.
- Proficiency in culturally sensitive service delivery to a diverse population, including American Indian/Alaska Natives.
- Knowledge of Federal and Alaska laws pertaining to domestic violence and knowledge of Anchorage community safety, police, medical, legal and other resources available.
Essential Functions Include and Are Not Limited To:
- Facilitate the provision of consistent, exceptional service to all AWAIC program participants.
- Provide crisis intervention, individual support, information, and internal/external service referrals to victims of domestic violence.
- Provide short term case management to victims of domestic violence.
- Increase victims' safety including individual safety planning.
- Develop and maintain a trusting, empowering relationship with the program participant that supports the program participant’s goal plan.
- Advocate on behalf of program participants with community agencies to establish rapport and cooperation.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with partner agencies and other service providers.
- Be proactive and effective in de-escalation of crisis situations.
- Maintain accurate and timely records through AWAIC’s data base, AVS.
- Provide relevant pieces of data for grant reporting in a timely manner to supervisor for the Flourishing Child Tribal Enhancement project.
- Remain current on all Federal and Alaska state laws affecting victims of domestic violence, including but not limited to; confidentiality, divorce, civil protective orders, and basic criminal procedure for domestic violence assault.
- Have an in-depth understanding of confidentiality as it pertains to AWAIC clients and have the ability to maintain confidentiality while working in an off-site location.
- Remain updated on current information in the field of domestic violence through research, workshop, and training opportunities.
- Attend and contribute in all required staff meetings and actively participate in the training of new staff and volunteers.
- Maintain record of data for reporting purposes.
- Acknowledge diversity reflected in the AWAIC program population and in the community at large and demonstrate a commitment to cultural competency.
- Demonstrate the ability to engage in and role model direct conflict resolution and mediation.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate directly and respectfully.
- Consistent and dependable attendance.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
