LATE LOVE Road Manager & Promoter Role

This is an opportunity to embark on a remarkable journey with Rachelle Zola, long-time advocate, educator and facilitator. Rachelle is walking on foot 754+ miles from Chicago, IL to Montgomery, AL. She began last April 2, 2024, in Chicago, and will be ending around September 15 in Montgomery. This gig is for you if: you embrace being on the road, meeting new people, can sink into quiet time, intuitively look and plan ahead, know how to handle a mid-sized RV and fearlessly take on unexpected challenges on the road by being resourceful and present.
Rachelle is currently in southern Tennessee, which is where your journey will begin as Road Manager.
Timeframe: Starting immediately through the end of September.
The Objectives You Will Meet
- Keep the RV in good working order, mechanically and for cohabitation.
- Follow the approximate , actively look ahead and dynamically pivot as needed.
- Scout and secure a safe place to park every night (churches driveway, legal places, parking lots, outdoor shopping centers).
- Support Rachelle in staying on track on and on time.
- Be an Ambassador for LATE LOVE.
- Ensure that Rachelle has all the support she needs when preparing for performances.
- Support Rachelle is meeting new folks and having conversations with people along the route.
- Be resourceful and conservative to minimize expenses.
How You Will Meet These Objectives
- Keep the RV in good working order by keeping resources full (water, gas, propane, batteries) and emptying gray/black water tanks as needed.
- Organize the RV for optimal storage, living and driving conditions.
- Schedule and drive the RV for maintenance and repairs as needed.
- If a piece of equipment is needed for the RV, research the best option. Then send it to the operations team with a description and direct link for approval and procurement. If something is needed in an emergency on the road, purchase it directly and submit reimbursements. If a more substantial repair is needed, get as far as you can with a recommendation and collaborate with the operations team to make a plan. Then manage the maintenance process.
- Communicate with the team on needs and challenges as they arise.
- Keep an eye on the weather for safety of yourself and Rachelle.
- Work closely with Rachelle each day to plan pick up locations and times for her walk, and be there no more than 20 minutes after her walk ends to pick her up.
- Be available by cell phone during walking hours in case of emergency.
- Get permission for parking as needed. Retail parking lots are often options (such as Walmart). Many of the performance venues have offered overnight hookup for a couple of days.
- You will be a representative and are responsible for promoting the project verbally and representing the project professionally at all times.
- Drop off marketing materials in any place you go into that has a bulletin board or a place for postcards. This will point people back to the late.love website, where they can connect and follow Rachelle’s route.
- Provide your personal cell phone for your own communication with Rachelle. As a backup contingency, you will offer your phone as a wi-fi hotspot.
- Coordinate with the operations team on locations for performances.
- Drive Rachelle to her performances, tech run-throughs and press interviews. Also assist with any aspect needed of set up and tear down, as well as documenting through photos and video.
- Drive Rachelle to specific locations within 50 miles of the established route, such as historically significant sites related to American racism and to meet with people who are interested in the project.
- Drive as needed to the grocery store for food and laundromats.
- Use project equipment (cell phone camera, tripods and drone) to take photos and videos of Rachelle, including performances, conversations and walking. This will not include any editing responsibilities.
- Misc. carpentry work such as fixing Rachelle’s cart and puppet if they should break.
- Attend weekly team meetings on Zoom – or as often as needed.
- Attend weekly Circles on Zoom.
- Be in direct touch with the team as new questions and challenges arise so they can be addressed promptly.
Roadmap
- You will begin in Tennessee and dynamically pivot as needed as Rachelle.
- Rachelle will be pausing in each of the main cities in Alabama – Huntsville, Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery.
- Each town will have their own highlights and focus on Civil Rights.
- The final piece of the pilgrimage will be in Montgomery.
- While Rachelle is stopped / paused in each location, interaction with the folks in that area is key.
- After the pilgrimage, you will drive the RV back to Chicago and stop at any places on the way back in case of other scheduled performances or notable events.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
You must be able to do the physical work for regular maintenance on the RV and get around the towns as needed.
Cohabitation
Food
Each person will cook for themselves, though we anticipate sharing of food will naturally arise at times pending food preferences and restrictions. Plotting the stores along the way prior to leaving will help ensure the team knows when and where to stop for food. In the summer, we anticipate farmers stands and markets along the road with fresh produce. Plan to bring a supply of packaged foods as appropriate. Each person should individually plan their meals and snacks.
Space
You will be sharing the living space of the RV with Rachelle. Your sleeping space is in the space above the driver and passenger seats – the size of a twin bed. You will share a bathroom and a refrigerator and living space.
Salary
$4,000/month
Time Off
Time off will be planned for in partnership with Rachelle on the days that there are no performances and other project requirements. There are not traditional weekend days off but there is plenty of down time each day when Rachelle is out walking. The Road Manager will schedule their time in a way that feels balanced while keeping the needs of the project at the center. If the Road Manager chooses to stay at a hotel on a night off, they are responsible for their own transportation and expenses.
