Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the maintenance, operation, repair, and testing of electrical/ electronic traffic control devices, various communication devices, and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) components, to include but not limited to, maintaining signal structures, overhead indications, and all hardware related to traffic signalization devices. Principal Job Duties
- Perform a variety of all tasks related to the maintenance, installation, repair, and testing of a variety of electrical/electronic traffic signal equipment from underground cables, traffic signal cabinets, and overhead signal component, in accordance with city policy, national electric code, and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices “.M.U.T.C.D.” to ensure work is performed in a safe, prudent, proficient, and in a professional manner.
- Troubleshoot signal systems in order to locate all malfunctions such as shorts, open or grounded circuits, and reason for equipment failure.
- Prepare and/or complete necessary all work orders, reports, and forms.
- Maintain and repair School Zone Flasher System and Warning Flasher components.
- Upload and download data between computer, signal controllers, and other traffic signal / ITS equipment.
- Assist with inspections and help identify traffic signal equipment needed within the Traffic Division.
- Utilize utility locate request software and cable locator to identify and locate underground signal cables and mark with paint and/or flags any energized/de-energized electrical cables and conduits to prevent damage by any construction activities.
- Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required: High school graduate or GED. Minimum two years working experience with electrical / electronic circuitry with a minimum of one year traffic signal experience
Valid Driver License and maintain a good driving record
Availability and willingness to work rotation schedule for Standby and On Call after-hour support which includes evenings, holidays, and weekends
Effectively communicate orally and in writing
Read, comprehend, and analyze blue prints and schematics
Knowledgeable of and the ability to perform work on energized circuits
Ability to properly setup a traffic control work zone within six months of hiring

- Work is performed in an outside environment in which incumbents are required to operate an aerial bucket truck, and in extreme weather must be able to utilize hand tools and electronic test equipment, and may be exposed to physical hazards, health and safety risks while working in and around moving/high speed vehicular and high volume pedestrian traffic.
- Routine work assignments typically involve some combination of walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling, as well as standing for extended periods of time; and requires the necessary physical strength/ability/dexterity to lift up to 80 pounds.
