Position Title: School Nurse
Reports to: School Nursing Coordinator
FLSA: Non-exempt
Summary of the position: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each corporation student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the school.
Qualifications: Current license of Nursing in the State of Indiana. At least two (2) years experience working in a hospital and/or Physician’s office as a licensed Nurse. Instruction and/or experience in administering medications. Necessary skills needed for the work to be performed, as dictated by the job requirements. Such alternatives in the above qualifications as the Board of School Trustees may find appropriate and approve.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assess, identify, and monitor the physical, emotional, and social needs of students and school personnel.

Assist students and school personnel who become ill or are injured at school.

Provide health counseling and follow-up to students, their families, and school personnel.

Assist teachers in adapting the school program to meet the individual needs of all students.

Schedule and conduct vision and scoliosis screening tests and assist with hearing screening.

Implement operational procedures for dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications in the school in accordance with the Corporation medication policy.

Participate with teachers in conferences regarding health problems affecting students progress in school.

Serve as a liaison between school, home and the community.

Visit in student homes as necessary.

Maintain comprehensive up-to-date health records for each student.

Follow policy and procedures for the prevention and control of communicable diseases within the school.

Other duties as assigned by the building administrator.

Enforcement of immunization requirements as mandated by Indiana Law for school entry.

Reports appropriate, school medical matters to parents, physicians, clinics, agencies and school personnel.

Serves as a resource person in matters pertaining to health curriculum planning.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
