Job Summary:
We are seeking a cooking teacher/chef with early childhood experience OR an early childhood teacher with a lot of passion for and experience in the kitchen. These cooking classes are for children aged 2-4 who are accompanied by a caregiver or parent 1:1. Lesson plans are already created but our teacher is always welcome to be creative with their own ideas!
Hours/Location:
Chelsea/flatiron location. These classes take place on Tues and Thurs afternoons. The work hours are approximately 2:30-6:00pm, with additional time needed for planning and shopping for ingredients. This position starts asap as our current teacher is leaving as of July 8 and we'd like to start paid training immediately. The class times cannot be changed.
Duties:
- Revise and develop cooking curriculum, which is already created but needs to be tweaked for each class depending on season, availability of ingredients, number of children in class, etc.
-Ensure all materials, equipment (on site), and ingredients are organized and on site well ahead of class time. Communicate with management about what might be needed for online purchase well ahead of class time.
-Creating shopping lists and shopping for items (reimbursed and paid, can be "off hours").
-Prep and implement cooking class along with an experienced assistant.
-Clean heavily between and after classes along with your assistant.
-Maintain a fun, engaging, and close relationship with students and their adults. They come for the class but also for you!
Experience:
- You must know your way around a kitchen and have a lot of experience baking, cooking, and working with recipes that are more complex than you'd think!
-The recipes include a lot of math since each child creates their own portion. You must be able to convert recipes into shopping lists without purchasing way too much or too little. Experience with or ability to work with recipes in this way is a MUST.
-Experience working with children aged 2-4 years old.
We are a small, tight-knit team and our teachers are long term. We are very excited to hear from you! You can read more about Kids at Work at www.kidsatworknyc.com.
