On the GitHub Dependabot Updates team, we're on a mission to safeguard the world's software dependencies - from open source to enterprise. We firmly believe that the key to securing software is to identify security concerns early in the development cycle and provide developers with an exceptional user experience that encourages and supports them to rectify any security vulnerabilities in a way that seamlessly fits into their workflows.
The Dependabot updates (DU) team delivers supply chain solutions. This includes identifying outdated versions of libraries for 20+ ecosystems, creating pull requests to address vulnerabilities and obsolete versions, and offering customizable configuration options. The team is responsible for the services that provide a first-class experience on GitHub, the open-source library supporting multiple ecosystems, and the infra components needed to run dependabot successfully across multiple platforms. These products, which are an integral part of the Advanced Security platform on GitHub, empower individuals and organizations to build safer and more secure software.

The Engineering organization is highly distributed and the right candidate can thrive in an environment of asynchronous communication. We expect you to have strong written communication skills and be able to create working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.
Responsibilities:
Lead technical decision making and architecture
Architect and implement highly available distributed systems
Mentor other engineers in their technical and architectural decision making
Document the systems you help architect, build, and maintain
Maintain and improve APIs used internally at GitHub
Write, review, and maintain code primarily in Ruby, Go, JavaScript, and Python.
Be a role model to create a culture of psychological safety both within the team and cross-team, where differing views can be shared and heard
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
For this role, we’re looking for an experienced software engineer with
6+ years of experience designing, developing, and shipping high-quality software at scale.
3+ years experience building and/or consuming REST-style APIs
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, planning, and organization.
A passion for fostering good engineering practices, tools, and processes
Highly developed organizational, people, and process skills
Ability to create a shared understanding of decision making, direction, priorities, and progress between the team, the org, and the broader company

Experience with open source software, maintainers, and community curation.
Additionally, any of the following experiences would be considered a plus: working with distributed teams and operating effectively across multiple timezones; building developer tools; exposure to and/or advocacy of static/dynamic analysis tools or security best practices.
Compensation Range: The base salary range for this job is USD $104,400.00 - USD $276,900.00 /Yr.
These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.
