Position Title: Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) Specialist

Location: Charlotte, N.C. with travel to other U.S. and international locations as needed (will require relocation to the Charlotte, NC area, or within a commutable distance)
BACKGROUND :
Global Support and Development (GSD ) is a humanitarian organization whose mission is to work with regional, national, and local communities across the Caribbean, Central America and South Pacific for resilience to crisis through rapid response, disaster preparedness, and climate adaptation.
GSD began as an impromptu response to Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu in 2015. Since our founding, we have worked with a number of regional, national and local communities and supported various international and United States domestic disaster response and preparedness efforts. Our first response defined the core of GSD’s DNA as an organization – to work with communities – led by their needs, filling the gaps they have identified, while leveraging unique approaches and capabilities with an innovation mindset. We work to support rapid response and strengthen local capacity through disaster preparedness initiatives, including innovation and climate adaptation, to reduce the impact disasters and the climate crisis have on communities.
*PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) Specialist is GSD’s technical expert, developing and implementing programs and projects to support partners and communities with UAS needs. The UAS Specialist ensures GSD’s internal UAS capability readiness by obtaining and maintaining equipment and providing internal training.
*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Develop, implement, and execute plans, processes, and projects in support of departmental strategy, maximizing efficient use of resources and ensuring shared vision;
- Support budgetary planning, control, and analysis for the program;
- Support critical decision-making processes, to include identifying issues and driving problem-solving, especially in resource-constrained and time-sensitive contexts;
- Develop and implement programs and projects for partner and community UAS engagements;
- Coordinate UAS training events in foreign countries for partner organizations;
- Participate in regional UAS program creation , implementation, and support;
- Oversee the development of comprehensive UAS curriculum and provide instruction to improve knowledge and skills of individuals and teams;
- Further develop GSD’s UAS policies, processes, procedures, and checklists;
- Incorporate humanitarian and data privacy best practices and policies into GSD’s UAS program;
- Understand and work within GSD’s Coordination Cell process;
- Maintain UAS equipment, ensuring inventory is adequate and available for anticipated need;
- Manage UAS permits and registrations in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations including immediately after a disaster when existing systems may be overwhelmed;
- Prompt and action GSD’s core values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work we conduct;
- Promote good stewardship of financial and other resources to achieve maximum benefit to those impacted by disaster or at risk of impact; and
Perform other duties as assigned.

*QUALIFICATIONS:
*
Required Experience:
- Five (5) or more years of relevant program management experience, in post-disaster settings within the humanitarian sector; and
Three (3) or more years experience operating UAS in an international context and/or humanitarian sector.

Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; or equivalent experience and training; or
An equivalent combination of relevant experience and training.

Professional Licenses/Certifications:
- FAA Part 107;
- UAS NIST certificate (any) is desired;
- FAA Fixed Wing, or Rotary, Airman Certificate is desired;
- FAA Certified Flight Instructor is desired; and
Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification desired

Knowledge/Skills:
- Proven ability to lead and motivate teams to produce quality results within challenging timeframes and ongoing change;
- Program oversight and management, development of programmatic policy, procedure, and guidelines;
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously under pressure;
- Confident and effective written and verbal communication, to include presentation ability;
- Ability to develop and deliver UAS curriculum and instruction to learners of all abilities;
- Cultural awareness and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of stakeholders to build relationships and amplify skills and experience of GSD’s partners;
- Knowledge of international civil aviation rules and regulations;
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to rapidly shift tasks;
- Experience working internationally; and
Working knowledge of Spanish required.
