Position Description:
The Benefits Assistant assists in the administration of the UFCW Health Insurance, Supplemental Life and Employee Life Insurance Plans.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned. This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.
Communicates with insurance companies to request conversion application forms.
Initiates and processes annual re-enrollment for Supplemental Life.
Processes discrepancies of payments received by Accounting Department for Locals for Supplemental Life.
Determines eligibility and maintains records and billings for the Supplemental Life Insurance Plan including communication with local unions and participants.
Receives and processes enrollment materials for Supplemental Life Plan, including follow-ups with provider regarding application status.
Prepares conversion notices for Supplemental Life Plan to terminated participants including disability waiver of premium option.
Prepares time sensitive mailings of COBRA letters and self-pay notices associated with leave without pay.
Processes Change in Basic Data Forms, Beneficiary Designations Forms and maintains form supplies.
Prepares and executes mass mailings pertaining to UFCW Health Insurance Programs, including open enrollments.
Processes payment of health insurance provider bills.
Processes Medicare reimbursement payments. Researches and resolves discrepancies by processing appropriate adjustment.
Deposits health insurance premiums when received. Processes monthly Canadian receipt memos for Canadian retiree premiums.
Processes monthly premiums for the UFCW Employee Life Insurance.
Processes G1943 Life Insurance payments and deposits.
Maintains employee confidence and protects operations by keeping data strictly confidential, including, but not limited to, the privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Education and/or Experience
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
Keyboarding Skills
Input ability of 45 words per minute.
Computer/Software Skills
Working knowledge of Word or WordPerfect software applications. Experience in or aptitude for working in a data base systems environment. Working knowledge of spreadsheet applications is desired.
Communication Skills
Demonstrated oral and written communications skills.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required
Ability to maintain employee confidence and protect operations by keeping data strictly confidential, including, but not limited to, the privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Must be highly organized and maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive employee and organization information and material.
Must be able to create and maintain participant files.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Demonstrated mathematical and analytical ability.
Attendance
Attendance will be a determining consideration in all cases where two or more applicants have equal ability, qualifications and/or reliability.
Job Demands
Pace of work is generally moderate and even with occasional periods in which work is rapidly paced. Duties are generally diverse, with some duties requiring analysis and reasoning.
Working Conditions
The work is performed in a normal office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Demands
The position involves, but is not limited to, written and oral communications skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and reaching.
