JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Responsible for providing communication access AAC devices in a wide range of instructional and extra-curricular activities within an educational program. The Assistant teacher / intervener serves as a bridge to the world for the student who is non-vocal verbal, which allows the student to develop a sense of trust and security that will enable them to learn. Since deaf blindness is primarily a disability of access, the student will require extensive and novel modifications to the existing educational model.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work under the direction and supervision of the teacher to whom assigned.
- Interpret for students utilizing the student’s preferred mode of communication.
- Provide interpreting during the school day in academic and non-academic settings.
- Confer with educators to plan for interpreting.
- Demonstrate and understand the educational process of interpreting by receiving training specific to job needs.
- To assist students who are non-vocal verbal and perform other related duties which benefit the students.
- Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with individuals unfamiliar with the educational setting.
- Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, and achievement.
- To assists and guide students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
- Works with students individually, in small groups, or whole group to reinforce and re-teach basic learning and implement assigned programs.
- Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.
- Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
- Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
- Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
- Assists all students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas.
- Prepares educational materials as needed.
- Assists teacher with parent contact, as requested, to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
- Participates in IEP process and serves as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.
- Assist students with activities of daily living to maximize their ability to participate in school or learning activities (toileting, feeding, maneuvering, hygiene, etc.).
- Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
- Assists with fostering independence, socialization, and self-esteem for all students.
- Participates in team or IEP meetings to provide information about the student’s communication abilities and needs.
- Serve as a member of the educational team to provide direct support to students with deaf-blindness as indicated in the students ‘Individualized Educational Plan.
- Work effectively in close physical proximity to students who are primarily visual and tactile learners.
- Become proficient in the assigned student’s communication methods and strategies.
- Assist staff in teaching academics, daily living, and social skills
- Accompany and support the student during community-based instruction.
Requirements:
- Paraprofessional Certificate
- Experience with AAC device
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with students with special needs.
- Must work cooperatively with all staff members and communicate effectively with parents.
- Exceptional organization and planning skills.
- A strong work ethic and sense of humor.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
