Job Description:
The City of Livingston, Montana is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform the role of Probationary Firefighter/Paramedic within the Livingston Fire Rescue (LFR). This is a full-time, benefit eligible role in LFR with the primary duty assignment in a shift staff role participating in and making a positive contribution to the operations of your assigned shift. This position reports to the Shift Captain, under the direction of the Fire Chief and helps with cross staffing and performs other duties as assigned.
Livingston Fire Rescue is a unique fire department nestled in the mountains of Southern Montana with one of the most advanced EMS systems in the state. We are a growing city situated along the Yellowstone River with our own unique challenges in the Montana rural/urban interface. We offer structural fire suppression, all-hazard rescue response, advanced EMS (Critical Care Paramedic and Community Paramedic services), technical rescue opportunities, airport ARFF, HAZMAT, and wildland response teams. Shifts: Beginning August 2024 we are offering a premiere 48-hours ON / 144-hours OFF Schedule (two days on / six days off) – 4 platoon system

Rate of Pay: July 1, 2024 starting base wage for Firefighter 1/EMT through Firefighter 2/Paramedic is $4,000.83 to $4,549.50 per month DOE. Additional compensation is also available through certification pay, special assignments, and inter-facility transfer pay.

Qualifications for Success:
· Under general supervision of the Battalion Chief on various shifts, performs a variety of duties involved in firefighting, EMS services, and the maintenance of equipment and specialized assignments.
· Cleans, maintains, and repairs tools and equipment.
· Ability to operate all emergency vehicles during emergent and non-emergent circumstances.
· Responds to fire, rescue, medical, and other emergency incidents.
· Lays supply and suppression hose lines and operates nozzle to direct stream of water on fire.
· Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders as needed.
· Cleans station quarters, equipment, and maintains a clean and orderly condition in and around the fire house.
· Keeps up on the study of departmental rules and regulations, public education and prevention practices, and firefighting techniques.
· Participates in fire drills and training exercises.
· May be required to respond to emergency calls during non-duty hours
· Ability to work well under pressure
· Ability to communicate effectively in emergency situations in person, on the radio, and/or cell phone.
· Ability to have familiarity with the city of Livingston and Park County geography and locations
· Ability to multitask and work with frequent interruptions
· Must maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and integrity
· Ability to read, write, communicate, and complete reports in English
· Completes and maintains comprehensive, accurate records and documentation with regard to transport, equipment inspection, supplies usage incidents, and other forms of documentation inherent in the operation.
· Properly assesses and transports patients with medical emergencies and injuries
· Ability to safely lift, transfer, and maneuver patients in and out of ambulances, facilities, residences, and other locations.
· Maintains a clean and complete uniform, personal hygiene, and professional, pleasant, and polite demeanor to all persons with whom the individual comes in contact while on duty.
· Operate all types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment and emergency medical equipment.
· Preserve evidence at fire scenes.
· Perform search and rescue of individuals in hazardous environments including collapsed buildings, auto accidents, hazardous material spills, confined spaces, high angle/back country rescue environments, and swift water and ice rescue.
· Attend special instruction in firefighting emergency medical techniques; perform drills with other engine company staff; become familiar with city layout, established response routes and hydrant system; prepare and maintain a variety of firefighting preplan drawings and schematics.
· Participate in special duties as assigned
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public
· Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Education:
· High School Diploma or equivalent required (per MT code annotated, Part 41; 7-33-4107)
· Related Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Must pass a physical fitness test
· Must pass a criminal background screening and driver’s license check – with approved history
Mandatory and/or Considered:
1. Current FF1 and FF2 with HAZMAT Operations
2. Current EMT-P Certification in Montana and/or National Registry
3. Current AHA or equivalent BLS and ACLS required
and/or
1. Current FF1
2. Current EMT-B and proof of active enrollment in a Paramedic School program
3. NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 (required or must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire)
4. PALS (required or must obtain within one year of hire)
5. Wildland/Red Card (required of must obtain within one year of hire)
Per Montana Code Annotated, Part 41, 7-33-4107:
7-33-4107. Qualifications of firefighters. The state of Montana determines that qualifications for the firefighting profession must recognize the rigorous physical demands placed on firefighters and the expectation of many years of emergency service. To qualify as a firefighter, an applicant:
(1) must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States;
(2) must be at least 18 years of age;
(3) must be a high school graduate or have been issued a high school equivalency diploma by the superintendent of public instruction or by an appropriate issuing agency of another state or of the federal government;
(4) must possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver's license;
(5) shall pass a physical examination by a qualified physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse, who is not the applicant's personal physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse, appointed by the employing authority to determine if the applicant is free from any mental or physical condition that might adversely affect the applicant's performance of the duties of a firefighter, including requirements described in 7-33-1902;
(6) must be fingerprinted and a search must be made of the local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record; and
(7) may not have been convicted of a crime for which the applicant could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary.
