Pharmacian Technicians Specific Duties:
- Assess patients response to drug therapy and planning drug therapy based on physician-established diagnoses.
- Receive and review prescription for the full range of pharmaceuticals to include controlled drugs on the formulary.
- Determine type of substance, strength, dosage, and quantity to be dispensed in accordance with accepted practice and pharmacy standing operating procedures (SOPs).
- Enter prescription into the outpatient computer system, reviewing profile for allergies, drug/drug or drug/food interactions and duplicate orders.
- Coordinate with prescriber of pharmacy to clarify issues or problems with dosing, interactions, or instructions.
- Obtain the pharmaceutical, prepare package labels, visually inspects the medication in the bottle to be dispensed, verify appropriate medication, and checks the printed label affixed to the container against the original prescription for correctness. When the prescription has been filled and labeled, container is set aside for a final check by the supervising pharmacists.
- Provide instruction to patients on proper use of medications, referring questions requiring professional knowledge and experience to a registered pharmacist.
- Perform all outpatient functions with minimal supervision by a registered pharmacist.
- Work independently in outlying clinic or troop medical clinic.
- Prepare the full range of sterile products and performs pharmaceutical calculations for a variety of preparations. Responsible for the safe handling, preparation, storage, and disposal of cytoxics and hazardous drugs. To ensure strict adherence to sterile procedures and correct operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Receive and reviews, prepares, and fills physician orders for intravenous (I.V) solutions, other parenteral, inpatient unit does orders, prescriptions, and bulk drug orders.
- Review parental orders for applicability and has extensive clinical staff contact regarding abnormal dosing, regiments or clinical indication.
- Perform final pharmacy check on sterile products, bulk drug orders, replenishment of emergency medication carts and inpatient unit dose medication carts in accordance with complex parental nutrition solutions dealing with body surface area and creatinine clearance rate formulas.
- Enter medication orders into inpatient computer system, reviews orders for allergies, drug/drug or drug/food interactions and duplicate orders.
- Coordinate with pharmacist or provider for clarify issues or problems with dosing, interactions, or instructions.
- Perform generalized maintenance in equipment during the preparation of sterile products, with affect the sterility of the finished IV product.
- Perform all inpatient functions with minimal supervision by a registered pharmacist.
- Assist the pharmacy supply section with the ordering, receiving and stocking shelves for pharmaceuticals.
- Prepare replenishment orders, receives incoming stock, checks for discrepancies, and rotates stock for the full range of medication and supplies to include controlled substances. Coordinate stock level changes as determined by unusual increases or decreased in demand and seasonal requirements.
- Research and prepare master formula for extemporaneous compounding of topical creams and ointments. Lotions, and oral solutions and suspensions, and other bulk compounding procedures.
- Oversee the compounding process and trains newly assigned personnel in proper process.
- Perform standard assays on finished products, verifies ingredients used, proper labeling is affixed, and insures a pharmaceutically elegant product is dispensed to the patient.
- Perform all functions independently with master formula being verified by a registered pharmacist.
- Call attention to short expiration dates and unusual appearance of items. Maintains security and limited access of all pharmaceuticals.
- Participates in collection and review of quality assurance data. Performs all inpatient functions with minimal supervision by a registered pharmacist.
- Assist in conducting medication storage area inspections/liaison visits. Assist in educating hospital staff of other facility staff on the proper storage, access, and security of pharmaceuticals to include controlled drugs.
- Review stock levels to ensure appropriate amount of pharmaceuticals are on hand to include critical care items.
- Set up, operate, maintain and assist in training other staff members on common and specialized instruments to include pharmacy PYXIS machines, point of use medication cabinets, and equipment in the outpatient and inpatient pharmacy.
- Order and evaluate laboratory tests necessary to evaluate drug therapy effects and outcomes. Receive and
- process orders for controlled substance from prescriptions, wards, clinics, and pharmacy subsections.
- Screen orders and prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness and conformity to laws and regulations.
- Perform final pharmacy check and issues controlled substance to authorized areas, completes issues and control documents ensuring that chain of custody is maintained.
- Safeguard controlled substances according to regulations and pharmacy policies, reports all problems to the Divisions Senior Pharmacy Technician and/or Chief, Pharmacy Division.
- Initiate, modify, or discontinue medications for ongoing therapy of chronic disease states (e.g., hypertension, hyperlipidemia, anticoagulant, diabetes, asthma, refill clinics, etc.), in cooperation with the medical staff.
- Monitor and manage pharmacotherapy requiring periodic adjustment due to specific or changing pharmacokinetic characteristics (e.g., aminoglycosides, phenytoin, antithrombotic).
- Administer prescription or non-prescription drugs according to established agreements or MTF protocols.
- Assess metabolic needs and order therapeutic enteral or parenteral nutrition products in the inpatient setting.
- Evaluate medical and medication histories for drug-related problems and adjusting drug therapy accordingly.
- Clinical pharmacy technicians shall include scheduling polypharmacy reviews and patient consoling.
Pharmacy Technician Qualifications:
- Degree/Education: Graduate from a formal pharmacy technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) or a formal pharmacy technician program (i.e., technical, hospital, or retail-based program) or a formal medical services training program of the United States Military.
- Certification: Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
- Experience: One year of experience as a pharmacy technician after graduation.
- Contract technicians shall be required to meet Continuing Education (CE) requirements. The Government will not reimburse for these costs.
- Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support; the contract technician shall have a Certified Pharmacy Technician certification and will receive Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) required training for the position in which they will perform, and that training currency is maintained. Documentation of such training shall be provided to the COR.
- Experience: 160 hours of internship training within last three years for outpatient setting and within the last two years for Inpatient Pharmacy.
- Board Certification: Maintaining board certification current doing the cores of the contract.
- Licensure/Registration: Maintain updated licensures as pharmacy technicians.
