The Department of Theatre Arts at Howard University invites applications for a faculty position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Theatre Arts – Theatre Technology - Scenic program. This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment expecting to start at the beginning of academic year (AY) 2024-25.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate success in teaching and guiding theatre students, proficiency in the arts and crafts of theatrical technology - scenic, relevant professional work in the field, scholarly contributions to the discipline, and a commitment to the missions, visions and values of Howard University, the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts and the Department of Theatre Arts. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrable interdisciplinary experience within academia, multi-hyphenate capacities within the fields of theatre arts, and a passion for bringing current, evolving styles, techniques, technologies, trends, scholarship and pedagogy of theatre design, technology and stage management.
Duties primarily include:
Administrative duties – the capacity to serve as Area Coordinator responsible for area:
- curriculum assessment and development;
- recommend course scheduling;
- student records maintenance;
- on-going academic performance assessment for the concentration;
- student academic advisement;
- season planning recommendations, including master-class recommendations;
- helping students with problems associated with registration, classes, rehearsals and performances;
- acting as spokesperson for the area;
- coordinating faculty with respect to student benchmark adjudications and other area-wide student assessments;
- creating platforms for professional opportunities for students;
- consulting with faculty members about their ideas and suggesting solutions for area issues;
- student recruitment;
- area faculty management and workload assignment recommendations;
- and area faculty recruitment recommendations
Instructional duties – teaching an assignment that includes some of the following courses in the Theatre Technology and other relevant areas within the Department of Theatre Arts with a minimum/maximum workload of 15/18 credit hours per academic year;
- Intro to Design
- Design Studio
- Period Styles
- Drawing and Painting Skills
- Model Building
- Computer Aided Drafting
- Hand Drafting
Research Scholarship and Creative duties - pursuing professional growth through funded research, scholarly writing, advanced study and/or original creative production on-campus appropriate to the discipline of Theatre Design, Technology and Stage Management.
Departmental, College and University Service duties – serving on departmental, college and university wide committees for the governance of departmental, college and university shared governance.
Production duties – serve as Technical Director and/or mentor for departmental productions;
- order construction materials
- supervise the building of scenery
- supervise the load-in and out of scenery from the shop to the theatres
- oversee the work of the scenic crews during on-stage rehearsals and performances
- maintain the scene shop’s equipment and supplies
Preferred Qualifications:
MFA in Theatre Design, Technology and/or Stage Management - or in some related discipline completed by date of employment AND/OR commensurate commendations in the field of Theatre Design, Technology and/or Stage Management or commensurate commendations in related industries
At least 3 6 years teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
Administrative leadership at the university/college level preferred
Substantial experience as a professional theatre practitioner contracted to work for major national - or International – theatre companies, for commercial and/or non-profit theatre productions.
Salary Range: Commiserate with market value and candidate’s experience

Notes About the Candidate Review Process: Applications will be accepted through May 1, 2024.
