Position Overview:
The ISS Coordinator monitors student behavior; ensures that students complete developmental and reflection assignments to improve behavior; oversees the completion of class assignments; and promotes conflict resolution strategies. Additionally, the ISS Coordinator collaborates with teachers, administrators, and parents to develop intervention plans aimed at promoting positive behavior and academic success. The ISS Coordinator is an integral part of the school behavior management team and may include additional duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Supervision and Monitoring: Oversee students assigned to in-school suspension, ensuring compliance with school rules and regulations. Maintain a structured and orderly environment conducive to learning and reflection.
- Behavior Management: Implement disciplinary measures aligned with school policies while fostering a supportive and respectful atmosphere. Utilize restorative justice practices when appropriate to address underlying issues contributing to student misbehavior.
- Academic Support: Coordinate with teachers to provide academic assignments and materials for students to ensure continuity of learning. Offer assistance and guidance as needed to help students complete assignments and stay on track academically.
- Individualized Support: Work with the deans to assess students' needs and develop individualized plans to address academic and behavioral challenges. Provide counseling, mentoring, and guidance to help students overcome difficulties and make positive choices.
- Communication: Maintain open and proactive communication with students, parents, teachers, and administrators regarding students' progress, behavior, and any concerns that arise during the suspension period. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop strategies for students' success.
- Record Keeping: Keep accurate records of student attendance, behavior incidents, academic progress, and interventions implemented during suspension. Ensure confidentiality and compliance with student privacy laws.
- Other duties may include supporting class coverage, monitoring school arrival/dismissal, and monitoring lunch periods, among other duties.

IDEA Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. serves approximately 320 students in Grades 9-12. Our unique program prepares students for both college and careers. Position Overview:
The In School Suspension Coordinator will play a critical role in maintaining a safe, orderly, and supportive learning environment by monitoring and supporting students who are assigned to in-school suspension. This individual will be responsible for implementing disciplinary measures, monitoring student behavior, and providing academic support to ensure students remain engaged in learning during their assigned period. The In School Suspension Coordinator will work collaboratively with deans, teachers, and other staff members to address student behavior issues, implement positive behavior interventions, and facilitate students' successful return to the regular classroom environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supervise students assigned to in-school suspension, ensuring adherence to school rules, policies, and procedures.
- Monitor student behavior and provide guidance, counseling, and support to help students reflect on their actions and make positive choices.
- Communicate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to gather information about student behavior and academic performance, and develop appropriate intervention plans.
- Assign and oversee academic work for students in in-school suspension, ensuring assignments are meaningful, relevant, and aligned with curriculum standards.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behavior incidents, and academic performance during in-school suspension.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and other stakeholders to develop transition plans for students returning from in-school suspension, providing ongoing support and monitoring as needed.
- Serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating empathy, respect, and professionalism in all interactions.
- Develop students’ social and behavioral skills based upon their unique needs.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to behavior management, restorative practices, and student support services.
