Medical Billing Clerk
Job Scope/Complexity
This position is responsible for the financial accuracy of all patient accounts through the creation of monthly statements and posting of payment received. This position will ensure that insurance claims are directed to the appropriate company for processing. Professionals are expected to pay attention to detail and enter a high volume of data.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Prepare monthly patient account statements.

Handle billing inquiries from patients.

Post all payments received.

Post all NSF checks to patient account and notifies patient of the returns.

Ensure rejected insurance claim issues are resolved.

View daily office schedules to ensure all applicable prior authorizations have been obtained.

Review insurance claim data to identify any discrepancies that could lead to denials or underpayments.

Investigates and resolves any patient account discrepancies. Work A/R outstanding collection accounts.

Maintains productivity and quality standards as determined by the department.

Performs month end close procedures.

Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
-
High school diploma or equivalent/ Associates in business.

One to two years’ experience in medical billing/coding and collections.

Detail-oriented and organized.
-
Computation skills, a must.

Must possess time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
-
BS/BA in Accounting / Business Administration.

Excellent communication abilities with aptitude in problem-solving.

Strong analytical skills.
Additional Requirements

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Maintains confidentiality and privacy in accordance with HIPAA and SMF policies

Understand and adheres to SMF Compliance Standards, Code of Conduct and Conflict of interest policy.

Work independently and cooperatively with staff and other external partners.
Training Requirements
-
The Billing Clerk, in conjunction with other staff, will be responsible for attending all mandatory training that appropriately matches the skill set and position they are performing.
