Effective July 1, 2024, salary range will increase 3%This position will represent the Town of Fuquay-Varina Billing and Collections Department and the Public Utilities Department participating with the inspection and maintenance of the water and wastewater infrastructure as it relates to meter reading collection and billing and the AMI program. This includes supervising two Meter Reader Technicians. An employee in this class is responsible for leading water meter collection and billing technical support to the Town’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program. Incumbents perform the full range of duties, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. This position receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the department. Has the ability to serve on-call and work after hours as directed. The supervisor will oversee the functions of the Towns Meter Reader Technicians.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Through effective supervisory practices, plans, organizes, and directs the operation, maintenance and repair of the water meter program including reading, building, programming, activating, inspecting, diagnosing, replacing, and routing AMI equipment.Is a subject matter expert for the Towns AMI software, to perform operational duties such as generating log summaries and submitting information to the billing system; generates water usage and validation reports.Supervises, plans, organizes, and directs the work of the Meter Reader Technicians, including coaching training, and counseling.Uses diagnostics tools to perform troubleshooting duties on all automated meters and determine the cause of malfunctions.Utilizes AMI software to perform operational duties such as generating log summaries and submitting information to the billing system; generates water usage and validation reports.Uses diagnostics tools to perform troubleshooting duties on all automated meters and determine the cause of malfunctions.Makes field assignments and coordinates field needs with administrative offices; updates and arranges meter reading routes; assigns work orders and follows up to ensure completion; approves staff leave requests. Trains new staff in routes, readings, meter installations, and trouble-shooting leaks; provides performance coaching as needed.Oversees, coordinates, and participates in vehicle maintenance.Works with meter and billing software provider to maintain town recordsPrepares and updates records of meter numbers, locations, tests, and related information, sequences meters in the system.May upload and download technology for meter reading.Reads water meters. Explains meter readings to citizens and answers questions of a general nature on meter readings.Cleans meters and reports and/or repairs broken and malfunctioning meters. Conducts rereads of meters when complaints of bills being too high are received.Connects and disconnects service for new and moving customers and based on nonpayment; replaces and repairs meters, parts, and boxes. Performs other related tasks as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Physical RequirementsMust be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.Must possess visual acuity to work with data and figures and operate a motor vehicle and handheld meter reading device.Education and ExperienceGraduation from high school and considerable related water meter or other utility field work involving technology and ability to work with figures and data, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special RequirementPossession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.Three years of supervisory experience is preferred. 5 or more years of experience in the industry. Additional InformationThe starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
