Job Title: Driver Manger
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Fleet Team Leader
General Description: The basic function of a Driver Manager is to coordinate the pick-up and delivery of freight, to inform drivers about load requirements, delivery instructions, directions to job sites, and provide tie down and handling instructions when necessary. The Driver Manger will be knowledgeable in the area of accidents and incidents, workers compensation basics, and providing the driver with instructions on accident procedures. The Drive Manager must match the loads with driver qualifications and equipment plus manage their drivers efficiently. The Driver Managers must attend meetings that involve their drivers.
Qualifications: A thorough understanding of the trucking industry to include the Federal Motor Safety Regulations, Knowledge of proper load securment, Excellent communication, leadership, and computer skills. Ability to work varied hours and take after hour phone calls.
Essential Functions:
Safety
- Hours of Service Log Books Be responsible for ensuring all driver violations are reviewed with the drivers and necessary disciplinary action after taken within two weeks of receiving the reports. Reports are to be turned into Human Resources/Safety Department.
- Complete daily reports to insure all drivers are getting a minimum of 6 hours break-time. There reports are to be turned into the Fleet Team Leader.
- Inspections Review all outside driver inspection reports.
- Out-of-Service Review out-of-service violations and make recommendations of proper disciplinary action.Corporate Policies Become knowledgeable for policies for speeding, drug and alcohol use, out of service tickets, claims, safety, and drivers, hiring and firing.
- Accidents and Incidents procedures Take initial phone call.
- Gather information.
- Make sue scene is secured.
- Notify authorities if needed.
- Clarify need for drug/alcohol testing (ticket issued at accident, injury or fatality)
- Take care of driver needs (Injured? Mental condition? Personal gear, Clothing, Transportation)
- Aid in arranging clean-up, towing, security, flaggers, etc. if needed.
- Determine is there an on site spill, if so, report immediately to supervisor and obtain help to get crews on site for clean-up.
- Get driver in for review.
- If driver is injured, fill out workers’ compensation forms and inform Human Resources/Safety Department.
- Cargo Claims Gather information on potential claim at initial call.
- Have driver take pictures and document specific damage.
- Report incident to Fleet Manager and Human Resources/Safety Department and schedule driver for review.
Dispatching
- Safety Safety is a Driver Manager’s number one priority on each dispatch. In order to accomplish this, the dispatcher must be pro-active and pre-plan the trucks. Match driver’s abilities and equipment with loads.
- Make sure driver’s have had sufficient rest and hours of service
- Enter information into AS/400 On empty calls, check satellite tracking for adequate time off.
- At next dispatch, get hours of service.
- On loaded calls, get trailer number, Bill of Lading number, weight, number of pieces, Shipper/P.O. number.
- ETA & PTA must stay updated with inbound trucks.
- Communications Give driver all pertinent information regarding pick-ups and deliveries. Plus routes, times, and load requirements.
- If delivery and pick-ups can’t be made, make sure customer gets notified, and Fleet Manager.
- Make sure driver understands instructions.
- When you have problems inform your Fleet Manager.
- When pre-planning trucks keep in mind regular runs and other situations that will help drivers work efficiently.
- Contact Training Department when you have a training issue with a driver.
- Supervision Listen to drivers. Complaints and improvement ideas.
- Handle payroll problems.
- Answer questions.
- When having problems with a driver, solicit the advice of the Fleet Manager, Business Unit Manager, and/or Director of Human Resources before it becomes a major issue.
- Let drivers know when they are doing a good job and when they need improvement. Review work.
- Participate in driver reviews.
- Complement drivers when a job is well done.
- Maintain a high morale within your driver core.
- Hold meetings with driver core.
Customer Service
- Booking Freight Shippers name & address
- Commodity being shipped
- Delivery & pick-up address
- Time to be delivered
- Time to be picked-up
- Special instructions (For example, equipment configuration, COD, etc.)
- New customers get a credit check
- Customer phone number.
- Negotiate delivery times with customer, keeping driver safety as primary issue.
- Enter information into the computer
- Call customers to find loads when necessary.
- Maintain service failure program. Enter information into program in the appropriate areas. Dispatch error

- Freight audit, make sure customers are billed properly
- Advise customers of shipment status and additional information pertaining to shipment
- Solve customer complaints
- Answer customer questions
- Follow-up on special instructions
Operations
- Have a complete understanding of what customer needs and requirements are. Know load/unload procedures. Location of load/unload site and any information that will help the driver safely perform tasks. (Who to talk to, special instructions, etc.)
- Be knowledgeable of truck’s revenue production. Know what factors affect the monthly production of each truck (i.e. driver’s time off, vacations, breakdowns) and keep records so problems can be recognized and solved.
- Coordinate loads with Customer Service to keep trucks in proper traffic lanes.
- Consult with Customer Service on amount of freight available in area.
- Coordinate equipment with shop. Enforce compliance of yearly inspections.
- Insure that trucks are serviced regularly.
- Fuel Costs Monitor daily where fuel is being purchased and know the fuel costs at various locations. Also, monitor idle time reports and review them with drivers.
- Require drivers to use terminal fuel and report those who fail to comply.
- Tire Costs Monitors tire damage on equipment and track repetitive problems. Review drivers who ruin tires through careless driving practices.
Miscellaneous
- Encourage the use of the satellite system.
- Meet with new recruits during orientation week.
- Promote changes in company policies, and operations to driver core.
- Perform other tasks as needed.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $48,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
