KommandoStore is an online military surplus store. We started in a basement in 2013, and now import from every continent on earth except Antartica (we could do more business in South America, but I digress.) We are a wild internet culture focused brand, and we have a lot of fun with it. I would say we are equal parts outdoor outfitter, mens fashion, and historical curiosities. Kind of like Mschf meets Nicholas Cage in Lord of War.
Internally, Kommandostore is a small, extremely agile team that punches way above our weight. Job Summary:
Kommandostore is currently experiencing a period of growth and evolution that is new to us. Our team is larger than it's ever been, and our reach is growing too. As Creative Director you will play a pivotal role in shaping the identity of KommandoStore and three (3) other brands in our ecommerce portfolio as we touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. We can guarantee more creative latitude than your last job and a lot more humor and variety day to day.
We are in a very exciting period of our overall journey. Our company is fueled and sitting on the launchpad with excellent fundamentals for extremely rapid growth over the next 2-3 years. We have multiple routes to success and a ride-or-die customer base. The world is our oyster, we just need some help getting our creative efforts organized, aligned, and firing on all cylinders.
The majority of your mission lies within our media and marketing teams. You will be responsible for leading the creative vision, and ensuring that all creative output aligns with our brand ethos and goals. To this end a strong background in content marketing, brand strategy, and media production is essential. We have a lot of talented, enthusiastic employees looking for a seasoned mentor to guide their growth and success.
Your department will be looking to you for clarity of purpose, professional guidance, and leadership in the face of day to day challenges. You will have the full, daily support of the founder team and other senior employees, but we do expect you to exercise sound independent judgement in your role. You should feel comfortable confronting chaos with a positive attitude and leaving things more organized than you found them.
A strong background in media fundamentals (photography, videography, editing, graphic design, copywriting, scriptwriting) is absolutely necessary, as is previous experience organizing and leading creative teams on significant projects. We prefer candidates who have an intimate understanding of the military and outdoors market, and directly relevant experience in D2C ecommerce.

A key aspect of this job is having both creative vision and solid understanding of marketing/business fundamentals. You should be able to work from first principles to articulate and implement sound, simple strategies for our media and marketing efforts. As Creative Director you will also be responsible for performing detailed analysis on the results of your strategies including setting goals and tracking KPIs across your team.
Basic Job Responsibilities:
Creative Vision and Strategy:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive creative strategies that add enduring value to our brand and attract new customers
- Create fun, surprising, and rewarding customer experiences for new and returning customers
- Lead the conceptualization and design of marketing campaigns, product launches, and brand initiatives.
- Set measurable goals and track KPIs to ensure successful implementation and continual improvement of our creative strategy
Team Leadership:
- Direct our current team of creatives (graphic design, digital art, copywriting, photography, videography, web design) across our brands
- Provide hands on guidance and creative mentorship to our junior staff, especially our core content team handling photography, videography and editing
- Foster a agile, creative, and working culture which encourages professional growth and development and rapid iteration
- Manage recruiting and expand creative teams as needed
Management and Communication:
- Oversee the entire creative process from concept to execution, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Ensure all creative work is consistent with brand guidelines and quality standards you develop
- Communicate creative strategies and project updates to the founder team, providing insights and recommendations
- Drive creative innovation by experimenting with new formats, platforms, and approaches to engage our audience
Core Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Creative Director or in a similar senior creative role, ideally within a D2C ecommerce company or brand agency
- Strong portfolio showcasing a range of creative projects executed to a high standard
- Professional photography, videography, and video editing experience for consumer products
- Excellent organization, communication, and leadership skills
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture
- Sense of humor <3
Nice to Haves:
- Content marketing experience on YouTube
- A passion for the outdoors (hiking, hunting, mountain biking, etc.)
- Interest/experience in military, shooting sports, or military history
