The Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse is responsible for providing safe and direct quality care for patients in the Pre-Operative and Post-Operative setting, in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary care team, to assist Physicians and other medical staff in delivering the highest standard of patient care available.
** MUST BE FLEXIBLE TO WORK BOTH DAY & EVENING SHIFTS **
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Greet all patients, visitors, staff members, and physicians upon their arrival to the surgical facility.
- Deliver the highest standard of patient care available by establishing priorities based on essential patient needs, available resources, equipment and supplies.
- Perform as a cross-functional team member to improve and facilitate patient flow throughout admission, pre-op, intraop, post-op, and discharge process.
- Provide direct, face-to-face assessment of surgical patients in designated preoperative area, including, but not limited to: identification of patient with two identifiers, verbalization of procedure, review of medical history, medications and allergies, mental/physiological status, presence of prosthetics or corrective devices, etc., according to the policies and procedures of the facility.
- Accurately document assessments, vital statistics in patient’s chart; Review pre-op orders and ensure all operative and informed consents are signed and in order.
- Start intravenous catheters (IVs), administer prescribed medications, in accordance with approved methods and techniques; Accurately label all medications and complete medication reconciliation.
- Assist in transferring patients to Operating Room; Prep surgical sites according to Surgeon preference and product indication; Provide extensive “Time Out” before surgery starts; Ensure sterile technique is utilized by all sterile team members at all times; Stay vigilant of possible harm or dangers throughout procedure to protect patient and staff members.
- Actively participate in efficient Operating Room turnover between cases; ensure all supplies, implants, medical devices, equipment, and items on Surgeon’s preference cards are present and ready for use.
- Assist Surgeons in retrieving all necessary information to generate Operative Report; Provide “Patient Info Card” with patient’s family/contact information to Surgeon at completion of procedure.
- Provide direct post-operative nursing care and emergency intervention to patients immediately following surgery.
- Provide accurate and thorough patient reports for transfer of care, including, but not limited to: assessment, safety issues, allergies, alerts (falls, isolations, history), and post-operative discharge instructions.
- Conduct post-op calls to follow-up with patients following facility discharge.
- Identify potentially unsafe situations and notify appropriate supervisors; Respond to life saving situations.
- Performs job duties and responsibilities in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards, along with the surgical facility’s policies and procedures.
- Communicate with courtesy when interacting with patients, physicians, hospital staff, vendors and the public – in person, on the telephone, or by email.
- Collaborate with team members to make appropriate lunch/meal accommodations for Surgeons, as needed.
- Coordinate and perform activities routinely as appropriate with the Management Team, Director of Nursing, Medical Director and the Quality Committee(s).
- with established federal, state and accreditation standards, along with the surgical facility’s policies and procedures.
- Perform other job related duties, as assigned or directed.

- Knowledge: Working knowledge and experience in a hospital, operating room or ambulatory surgery center. Ability to anticipate the needs of the physician and has equipment, instrumentation, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures. Ability to scrub all types of cases preferred. Ensures that an adequate amount of in-house supplies and medical gases are available in accordance with weekly caseload. Willingness to assume additional assignments on an as needed basis.
Qualifications:
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Texas required.
- Minimum 2-3+ years of relatable work experience required.
- Current ACLS certification required.
- Must have flexible schedule and be available to work day or evening shifts 2-3x per week
