Position Title: Carrier Manager
Reports To: Director of Operations
FLSA Status: Exempt
Classification: Full-time
Purpose: To uphold ‘The JEAR Way’ and support JEAR’s strategic direction. The Carrier Department Manager is responsible for protecting JEAR by managing all aspects of the carrier approval process, along with supporting the Sales Floor through timely and accurate due diligence verification of Carriers. The Carrier Manager serves as a key pillar in the Operations department of JEAR and will work closely with other managers in the Operations department, namely the Claims Team and High Value Team. The Carrier Manager is ultimately responsible for the integrity and quality of the carriers that are used by JEAR in an effort to both support sales and mitigate risk.

Carrier Department:
- Responsible for ensuring the Carrier Department is following all protocols and procedures, including but not limited to: Validation of Carrier Contacts, ensuring Insurance protocol, along with a detailed review of the Carrier’s Profile on 3rd Party sites and within JEARnet
- Oversee day-to-day performance of the team and individual members through performance metrics determined by Carrier Department Manager, DOO and COO.
- Conducting routine audits of team performance to ensure accuracy is maintained and protocol is adhered to.
- Final decision maker and escalation contact for the Carrier Team on using “at risk” or “questionable” carriers,
- Serve as the primary liaison for the sales teams to communicate and resolve decisions on higher risk carriers, working directly with Sales Managers to ensure carrier quality is maintained. This includes working directly with SM’s to understand needs of the team regarding market, lanes, commodities to continue to enhance the carrier decision process.
- Work directly with Claims Manager and High Value Team Manager to effectively manage and mitigate risk by establishing processes and procedures that are integrated between departments, and constantly evaluating best practices for the carrier team, maintaining solid understanding of the impact that these protocols have on other departments within JEAR.
- Develop carrier sourcing strategies with sourcing team using internal TMS and external systems to proactively recommend carriers that may be better options for lanes, risk level, or commodity type on specific loads. Will be the first point of contact for many carriers onboarding with JEAR, and should work to begin and maintain relationships with those carriers in an effort to grow JEAR’s regular and recurring carrier base.
- The Carrier Department Manager should serve as a backup for the team to when needed to ensure the department maintains prompt service to the Sales Floor, including taking on the day-to-day functions of the team during times of high volume or personnel shortages.
- Communicate with Director of Operations (DOO) or Claims Department, as needed, on using “at risk” or “questionable” carriers.
- Maintain weekend call coverage schedule and ensure this is communicated timely to those participating.
- Answer phones, Process incoming Certificates of Insurance (COI) and upload to TMS, approved time cards and PTO for team members.
- Ensure shifts are covered when team members are out of the office
- Constantly evaluate personnel needs for the department, with responsibility to effectively train new hires on the team
Continued growth and development of the Carrier Department to include

- Conduct performance reviews, identifying strengths and opportunities for growth.
- Educating the team on company updates, new protocol, etc.
- Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems and executing on those objectives.
- Monthly meeting with VP of Sales on department trends and updates, sales updates, and identifying areas for process improvement.
- Work directly with the DOO on process improvement throughout the department, including: Identifying weaknesses in current protocols, identifying the need to amend Carrier selection criteria, collaborate with DOO on JEARnet enhancements within the Carrier Department, collaborate with DOO to determine when additional personnel are needed to meet workload requirements.
- Continuing education, development, and training to ensure personal and professional development within the Operations Department.
- Additional responsibilities as determined by Director of Operations and other members of leadership team.
Minimum Qualifications
Desired Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Minimum 2-3 years industry experience specific to carrier sales, carrier procurement, and/or carrier onboarding
- Experience in vetting carriers, sourcing carriers, and decisioning quality carriers
- Experience in working with various departments within a transportation company including collaboration with sales/customer department.
- Experience dealing within, evaluating, and creating processes and procedures within a department.
- Prior management experience preferred, but not required
- Prior work within a TMS system required.
- Preferred experience with Highway, Carrier 411, RMIS, My Carrier Packet, or other carrier onboarding system.
