Ecotone LLC. is looking for a positive and ambitious forestry technician to join our growing team. Ecotone specializes in stream restoration, storm water pond retrofit, and wetland construction, as well as providing design, environmental consulting, and mitigation services.
Primary Purpose
Under the direction of the Nursery Manager, supports all phases of forestry operations, including data collection, site prep tasks, coordinating plant material orders, planting, spraying, mowing, survival inspections, and overall plantation maintenance and documentation. Some tasks may be performed independently.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide input on approach, species, maintenance activities, and costs of forestry proposals
- Planting including but not limited to site preparation; plant, tube, and stake installation; deer fence installation; transporting plants; loading and unloading trucks; and quality control.
- Conduct on-site meetings with landowners to secure new planting locations
- Use GIS and GPS to support scientists and designers in development of site plans and restoration concepts
- Coordinate planting project timelines, communicate with PMs about scope or schedule changes
- Collect data and monitor reforestation and existing forest sites
- Perform inspection of site prep and planting activities
- Communicate with project managers, foreman, and construction personnel before, during, and after project implementation
- Support efforts to complete concept plans, design drawings, and written reports to document methods and analysis
- Assist nursery and construction staff as appropriate
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife Management or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred (relevant work experience may be substituted for a degree)
- Some experience in forest management, tree care, landscape or nursery industry, plant and tree identification, invasive species management, habitat enhancement preferred
- Pesticide applicator license preferred, or ability to obtain in within six months
- Ability to operate a chain saw
- Ability to identify native trees and invasive plants common to the area
- Familiarity with GPS technology
- Ability to work successfully independently and with a team
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated initiative
- Positive attitude
- Experience with GIS software preferred
- Ability to learn forestry concepts and translate to plans with guidance
Working Conditions
Typically, forestry coordinators will be outside the majority of working hours. Daily activities will include conducting site visits for potential new reforestation sites, overseeing installation, conducting QA/QC inspection, conducting survival inspections, determining maintenance requirements, implementing or overseeing maintenance activities (e.g., mowing, trimming, spraying, tree tube and deer fence maintenance, etc.) and coordinating reinforcement plantings. Periodically perform office tasks associated with creating maps, assisting with planting plans, ordering plants and associated materials, communicating with landowners and other reforestation professionals, and coordinating with Ecotone Team members. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures or other weather extremes may occur. This could also require physical demands like walking long distances in difficult terrain and working in remote locations. Overtime is offered during busy seasons. Occasional overtime may be required to meet project deadlines. We value work-life balance and strive to minimize overtime, but candidates should be willing to work extra hours when necessary.
