Team Grant Writer Located in Alabama for Nonprofits
Nonprofit Navigators seeks a self-managed team member who is passionate about nonprofit organizations and the people (or animals) they serve. We map our nonprofit clients’ path to success by guiding them in designing effective programs proven by accurate and relevant evaluation systems, helping them to pursue excellence in all areas, presenting their work to the right potential funders, and writing outstanding grant proposals. Although you will work remotely, we are seeking a grant writer located in Alabama, preferably in the Birmingham metro area at this time.
This position involves:
- Researching potential donors and foundation grant opportunities for nonprofit clients.
- Writing letters and grant proposals on behalf of these organizations.
- Organizing, formatting, understanding, assessing attachments (including financials) for proposals.
- Working with a remote team, interacting primarily by phone, Zoom, and online applications such as Trello, Dropbox, Google suite, etc.
If you are the perfect candidate for this position, you embody these characteristics and skills:
- You are extremely familiar with nonprofit development.
- You have significant experience in grant writing for nonprofits.
- You love putting ideas into words, sentences, and paragraphs in a way that communicates clearly and succinctly, while also engaging the reader.
- You enjoy working as a team member while also working on your own in your space of choice.
Nonprofit Navigators’ Expertise and Values
The mission of Nonprofit Navigators is to map a path to success for nonprofits.
These are our guiding principles:
· We operate with integrity. We speak and write the truth to the best of our knowledge. We exercise integrity, honesty, and do the right/moral thing in every interaction with clients, foundations, and colleagues.
· We have an abundance mindset. We believe in the idea of abundance rather than scarcity. We work to elevate others. We are generous with the skills, talents, and opportunities with which we’ve been blessed. There are enough resources––money, time, kindness, etc.––to go around.
· We are driven by compassion. Reflecting the work of our clients, we serve with compassion, understanding that everyone has a story that is not always evident on the surface. We treat others the way we want to be treated.
· We pursue excellence. We are experts in nonprofit leadership, development, and operations. Dedicated to staying on the cutting edge of philanthropic trends, we are always learning and teaching.
· We work synergistically. We collaborate, building on each other’s energizers and strengths.
Since 2008, Nonprofit Navigators (AKA Allen Consultants Inc.) has provided consulting services for nonprofit organizations and helped them access grants offered by charitable foundations and government programs through grant writing. We started in the Denver Metro area in 2008 and in 2018 expanded to Birmingham, Alabama. Our specialty is small- to medium-sized nonprofits, and we have worked with a broad variety of missions and passions. We are seeking a team member to work remotely in a supportive grant-writing role, alongside all six of the current team members.
What sets us apart is our ability and willingness to tailor services to the specific needs of each nonprofit organization we have the privilege to serve. We have developed processes which guide our work, but “the way we’ve always done it” does not tie our hands. We work together to ensure each organization is provided with the services they need in order to access sufficient resources to carry out their mission.
Participation-Age Company.
Following the principles of The Crankset Group (www.cranksetgroup.com), Nonprofit Navigators is a participation-age company, which means we do not hire employees. We hire stakeholders. Each member of the Nonprofit Navigators team plays a valuable role in serving clients and moving the company forward. As the company grows and earns money, all stakeholders reap the benefits. Your voice, skills, ideas, and talents are all necessary. No one is more important than another. We believe strongly that an organization operates best when everyone is doing the work that represents the highest and best use of their time.
We are looking for a stakeholder who is self-managed. You won’t be micro-managed, although we will provide training and open communication amongst the team. You don’t need to clock in at a boss-ordained time. You will communicate with your team about when you plan to work and complete tasks in a timely fashion. Since our work is extremely deadline-oriented, it is imperative that you can manage your time and meet deadlines.
Responsibilities include:
- Living Out Our Guiding Principles outlined above.
- Living out our Mission statement. “Nonprofit Navigators: Mapping your nonprofit’s success.” Everything we do for our nonprofit clients is to elevate them, serve them, and help them to excel at the mission to which they are called. The goal is always to propel them forward, assisting in whatever way necessary.
- The mindset of an owner. We are all stakeholders (fully committed and engaged staff), and no matter how many hours you spend with us, you’re as much a part of what we do as anyone. You need to have that mindset. You are an incredibly valuable part of our team, and our clients will get to know you and lean on you to help them.
- The mindset of a leader. We’re looking for someone who is self-managed and self-motivated who knows what results we want and enjoys completing the work without being micromanaged. We all work together in community to get things done, and we need someone who will join us as an equal team member, not as an “underling” or employee.
- Growth mindset. You have ideas and connections that can move Nonprofit Navigators to the next level. You are welcome and expected to help grow the company through adding clients, services, or whatever other ideas any of us may have. We want you on board for the long haul, not just a transition point in your career. That’s why we call you a stakeholder. We will all grow together, and we will all benefit!
- The actual work. As one of our grant writers, you will support the consultants on the team by keeping the grant wheels turning. While the consultant is the main contact for each client and oversees the big picture work of serving them, you will do the vital work of following the grant schedule, writing proposals, and submitting them on time.
- Grant Writing. You will need a strong command of the English language and grammar rules. Each foundation has unique and specific requirements. We have developed templates for many of the letters and proposals for current clients, but these need to be updated and tweaked constantly. You will also have the opportunity to develop original language when we work with new clients.
- Seek out foundations whose areas of funding interest fit well with the mission and work of our nonprofit clients. You will become very familiar with a number of our nonprofit clients. You will have access to several foundation search engines and will use these to find excellent prospects. This task will be shared with the consultants and other grant writers.
- Conducting Research. You will research current data in order to present an excellent statement of need for grant proposals.
- Understanding Financials and other attachments. As part of the grant proposal process, you will collect, format, and organize all of the required attachments, such as financials, lists of board members, 501(c)(3) letters, anti-discrimination statements, etc. Training is provided regarding how to read and assess these documents and details about formatting requirements, if needed.
- Systems and Process Mindset. You will be given a system of how to do the various aspects of your job. You need to be able to work within that system, but you are always welcome to present ideas to the team about how to make things more efficient.
- Hours. Part-time (25-30 hours per week). During the probationary period, you will need to be available between 9am and 4pm CST for training. After the probationary period, you will have the flexibility to set your own schedule.
- Pay. Compensationwill be commensurate with the talents, initiative, motivation, and value you bring to the position.
