Key Responsibilities:
Autonomous and Varied Role:
- Respond to Rapid Response Team calls.
- Assist in the transportation of critically ill patients.
- Provide consultation on particularly complex cases in inpatient units.
- Conduct phlebotomy and assist with IV placements.
- Engage in numerous other scenarios, contributing to a dynamic and ever-changing work environment.
Early Recognition and Treatment:
- Utilize the Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) for virtual surveillance of patients.
- Combine vital signs and assessments into a score for early detection of changing patient conditions.
Support for Frontline Staff:
- Collaborate with inpatient nurses to assess patients when concerns arise.
- Validate unit nurses' patient assessments to ensure comprehensive and accurate care.
Clinical Skills, Education, Consultation, and Mentoring:
- Blend clinical expertise with educational support for staff.
- Provide consultation on complex cases and act as a mentor to junior team members.
Team Collaboration:
- Work as part of a specialized team consisting of 6-7 experienced nurses.
- Possess critical-care and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training.
Coverage Across Various Practice Settings:
- Cover pediatric inpatient units, ICU, Pediatric Emergency Department, Child Psychiatry, Infusion, and other areas within the Children's Hospital.
Compensation:
- Enjoy a competitive salary with an additional $5.10/hr SWAT differential.
- Receive typical off-shift differentials for enhanced compensation.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. BSN or (demonstrated BSN enrollment required with completion within three years of hire.) All newly hired Registered Nurses must have current BCLS certification or must obtain within one month of hire.
EXPERIENCE
Registered Nurse is the foundational job description for all RNs. All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.
LICENSURE
Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification highly encouraged.

PHYSICAL DEMAND
Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing, and touch. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Will be exposed to physical, mental and emotional illness as well as end of life conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half of the day. Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting. Must be able to assist pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
Additional Information
RN must have a minimum of 5 years of critical care experience (pediatric experience preferred). PALS required.
