Role and Responsibilities:
Contract Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) perform requirements with minimal monitoring by a Registered Nurse (RN) provides basic, appropriate, effective interventions to individual patient needs according to established facility policies, safety standards and procedures. The contract CNA refers to the professional RN when deviations and problems not covered in the assignment occur. The contract CNA anticipates the needs of professional staff and works with them as a team member.
- Nursing Assistants (NA) provide a vital role assisting the licensed nurses providing direct patient care for patients in the medical center. In addition, they have proven their value in providing a pool of one-to-one special observers for “at risk†patients. The AVAHCS has no intent of contracting “sitters†specifically as those initially assigned as a special observer are subject to reassignment to either role in either facility. Their basic duties are outlined below, and contract agencies shall provide a competency checklist verifying their level of expertise in these skills.

Performs a range of personal nursing care which includes feeding, walking, lifting, turning patients, providing related hygiene care to patients using specialized equipment receiving oxygen or suction therapy.
- Performs a range of diagnostic support duties which includes taking, recording and reporting to the nurse deviations in vital signs and change in patients’ condition such as diabetic, uremic coma, insulin shock, gastro-intestinal hemorrhage and reporting them to the nurse or doctor. Assists the doctor in a variety of diagnostic examinations such as lumbar punctures, liver biopsy, bone marrow examinations and emergency procedures.
- Assembles necessary equipment and positions patients, collects, labels and transports specimens to laboratory. Checks patients frequently during and following procedures for changes in patient’s condition. Escorts patients to and from diagnostic studies. Cleans and cares for equipment used in oxygen and suction therapy, frame beds and reports equipment in need of repair.
- Performs a range of treatment procedures that include changing simple dressings. Cares for patients with infection, communicable diseases and those in infection isolation. Cares for patients receiving oxygen via cannula or mask as well as venti-mask, patients with chest therapy and postural drainage. Cares for patients with condom catheters as well as indwelling Foley catheters. Administers basic life support measures.

Verbally provides information to the nurse for inclusion in the Nursing Care Plans. Documents vital signs. Enters information about the patients’ condition in the patients’ chart. Assists with completion of patients’ admission history.

Promotes physical independence by supervising patents in self-care activities including eating, dressing, application of prosthetic devices and braces. Instructs patients on pre- and post-operative care based on general information provided by a doctor or nurse.

Conducts inventories upon admission and as needed
- Conducts contraband searches
- Conducts on-going evaluations of the mental health environment of care

Assist patients as needed with activities of daily living (ADLs)

Accompanies mental health patients to appointments outside of the mental health unit

These activities will be monitored in accordance with VHA and AVAHCS regulations
Education Requirements:
- A current unrestricted CNA license from the state of Georgia (United States), and a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate accredited by the American Heart Association.
- Two (2) yeas minimum experience working in skill and (must have worked within the last six months in skill set).
