The City of East Lansing, Michigan, a residential community of 48,500 people and home to Michigan State University, is seeking three full-time Firefighter/Paramedics to join the City’s professional fire department.

JOB SUMMARY
This skilled position responds to emergencies to protect life and property and mitigate environmental hazards. Primary duties include:

fire suppression, haz-mat response, rescue, advanced life support treatment/transport, and general maintenance/custodial care of facilities, grounds, apparatus, tools, and equipment.
The firefighter/paramedic position is physically and mentally challenging. Ongoing training is required and offered by the department to develop and maintain necessary skills, proficiencies, certifications, and licensing. There is potential in this position to be offered further training in technical rescue disciplines and advanced haz-mat.
Additionally, this position also involves participation in community events to positively represent the department and the city.
PAY
Lateral movement for time-in grade applied. Overtime compensation is calculated at 1.5 times base pay. Overtime opportunities include shift coverage, Michigan State University athletic events, and other first-aid coverage for events.
WORK SCHEDULE
The average work week is 48 hours. The work schedule consists of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty with a “Kelly Day” (assigned shift day off) every 7th shift. The shift schedule is 0730 – 0730, including weekends and holidays.
Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license with no restrictions or suspensions.
Certified State of Michigan Paramedic or ability to complete within 6 months of hire.
ACLS and BLS card holder or ability to complete within 6 months of hire if not a certified medic at time of hire.
Certified State of Michigan Firefighter I & II
Certified in Haz-Mat Operations
Physically and medically qualified to fulfill the duties of the position as determined by a medical examination and drug screen performed by a physician of the City’s choice.
Ability to successfully complete a written, practical, and ability test to be eligible for the interview process.
This position works in extreme environments and hazardous conditions, including in all types of weather conditions, in confined spaces, and in areas with exposure to fumes, gases, noxious odors, dust, and poor ventilation.
This position requires responding to emergencies at all times of day, including on evenings and weekends. May be exposed to significant hazards.
Essential and marginal functions require an ability to perform physically demanding work under adverse working conditions requiring physical strength, stamina, and agility.
Must be able to wear and work in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Must be able to frequently lift heavy objects. Must be able to operate hand and/or specialized power equipment, fire suppression devices, and vehicles as assigned.
Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and develop and maintain effective working relationships.
