Minimum Qualifications
Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture
OR
One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Duties Description
Performing all cultural activities required to produce tree and shrub seedlings including planting, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide application, mulching, and other related tasks.
Equipment operation including trucks, tractors, forklifts, and front-end loaders; supervision of seasonal staff during harvesting and shipping operations; maintenance of seed orchards including mowing, pruning, and seed collection; extraction, cleaning, and testing of tree and shrub seed; and accepting tree orders from public and representing NYS DEC Saratoga Tree Nursery at public/environmental events.
Chainsaw use is required. Will be required to take and pass chainsaw safety courses and obtain certification as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Technician or Applicator.

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
This is a seasonal hourly appointment funded through 3/31/25, with a possibility of continuing beyond that date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
