The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is seeking a part-time Student Laboratory Assistant for its Sterilization Monitoring Service. The Sterilization Monitoring Service at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is dedicated to providing dental professionals with reliable service in order to assure them of hassle-free monitoring of the sterilization equipment.
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the United States and it is the only public dental school in Ohio. The college is divided into ten divisions with all major ADA-recognized dental specialties represented.
The successful candidate for the positions of SMS Student Laboratory Assistant performs time-sensitive culturing of biological indicators received by the Sterilization Monitoring Service utilizing a variety of laboratory equipment and a computer for database entry. The typical daily duties include: preparation of media, autoclave of cultured bacteria, clean and maintain laboratory, perform biological culturing of spore strips, evaluate spore tests, determine results, prepare and interpret gram stains, enter tests data and verifying entered results. Administrative duties include obtaining and sorting mail, file tests results, clean-up or set-up of the conference room, assists SMS personnel with projects, performs special projects as needed, including assisting with professional dental education seminars, events, and exhibits. Also reports to SMS Program Manager.
Work Schedule
12 - 20 hours per week. Typical shift length is 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. SMS Operates over academic breaks and expects student workers present. SMS operates solely on weekdays.
Physical Requirements
The body must be able to reach, bend, stoop and reach in order to perform most lab procedures. The ability to sit and stand for a duration of time is also necessary. Other specific requirements include color spectrum differentiation; manual dexterity/motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, physical communications; visual acuity and communication/language development. Individuals in this position may be exposed to the following: chemical hazards (skin irritants); equipment; use of sharp instruments; and latex.
Qualifications
Required:
Courses in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
Desired:
Demonstrated abilities in microbiological laboratory techniques, experience working with computer databases.
Pay Range
The targeted hiring rate for this position is $13.00/hour.
Final candidate must successfully complete a background check and drug screening.
