UIC is seeking a IS Security Administrator to join our Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research IT team. This role is responsible for the overall security and monitoring of information systems for OVCR. These include, but are not limited to, the network, server, storage, and virtualization infrastructure, as well as applications and database environments that consist of several Research Administration systems. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for maintaining documentation related to security processes and incidents, adherence to and implementation of security best practices, as well as participation in other information security related projects as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Evaluate, test, recommend, develop, monitor, and maintain information security policies, procedures, and systems, including hardware, firmware, and software. Work with System Admins, enterprise architects, developers, and support staff to design optimal security practices when developing new application requirements

Design, develop, and test procedures to ensure the safety of information systems and devices; protect from intention and unintentional viruses, access, or destruction.

Conduct security assessments of systems and applications using penetration test and ethical hacking tools and risk assessment/mediation methodologies to evaluate vulnerabilities.

Identify and resolve risk and exposure through assessment and compliance audits as well as testing of hardware, software, and other equipment.

Ensure that IS security architecture/designs, plans, controls, processes, standards, policies, and procedures are aligned with IS standards and overall IS security.

Mitigate security risks associated with systems and applications, which have a high technical complexity and / or involve significant challenges to OVCR.

Monitor security tools that are available to our department like listed here but not limited to: (ex: Microsoft Defender for Endpoint protection, Qualys, Splunk). Work with Infrastructure Team, Data Analytics, Application support and development team, and other teams to ensure any findings suggested by security tools are remediated as soon as possible

Maintain, audit, and enhance security system and ensure the integrity of housed IT infrastructure. Manages and maintains both network and system-level access controls.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:

Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study

Minimum of 1 year of professional IT experience within IS Security which includes demonstrated experience in assessing, monitoring and maintaining, and evaluating information security policies and systems, including hardware, firmware and software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferably 3-4 years of experience with cybersecurity.
- Information Security certification preferred (CompTIA Security +, CRISC, GIAC, CISSP, CISA, CISM)
- Knowledge of software development lifecycles, concepts, and methodologies
- Knowledge of application security technical controls and common vulnerabilities
