Position Overview
This interim position will be in Auburn, New York, and report to the Chief Nursing Officer. The Director of Behavioral Health is responsible for leading and coordinating the daily operations of a 14-bed Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit and an Outpatient Psychiatry office. This role includes overseeing staff supervision, planning, direction, and coordinating departmental and outpatient activities. The Director ensures that all operations comply with state, federal, licensing, certification, and accreditation regulations and standards, emphasizing addiction treatment.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership:
- Direct and coordinate daily operations of the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit and Outpatient Psychiatry office.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective operations.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Behavioral Health Unit and Outpatient office to ensure compliance with state, federal, licensing, certification, and accreditation regulations and standards.
Staff Supervision and Development:
- Supervise and provide leadership to the Behavioral Health staff, including hiring, training, evaluating, and, when necessary, disciplining staff.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that promotes staff development and retention.
- Ensure staff are adequately trained in addiction treatment and other relevant areas.
Patient Care and Program Development:
- Oversee the delivery of high-quality patient care, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate and effective treatment, particularly in the area of addiction.
- Develop and implement evidence-based programs and services to meet the needs of patients and the community.
- Ensure patient care plans are developed, implemented, and evaluated regularly.
Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Ensure that the Behavioral Health Unit and Outpatient office comply with all relevant regulations, standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Develop and implement quality assurance programs to monitor and improve patient care and operational efficiency.
- Conduct regular audits and assessments to identify areas for improvement and ensure continuous quality improvement.
Financial Management:
- Develop and manage the departmental budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to financial targets.
- Monitor financial performance and implement strategies to optimize revenue and control costs.
- Prepare and submit financial reports as required.
Community Engagement and Collaboration:
- Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to promote the Behavioral Health Unit and its services.
- Represent the Behavioral Health Unit at community events, meetings, and other forums as appropriate.
- Collaborate with other departments and services within the hospital to ensure coordinated and integrated care for patients.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field required.
- Licensure or certification in a relevant field preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in behavioral health, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role.
- Experience with addiction treatment is essential.
- Demonstrated experience in program development, staff supervision, and quality assurance.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of state, federal, licensing, certification, and accreditation regulations and standards for behavioral health services.
- Ability to develop and implement effective policies and procedures.
- Financial management skills, including budgeting and financial reporting.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Working Conditions:
- This position requires a high level of mental and emotional stamina, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- The Director will spend a significant amount of time in both the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit and the Outpatient Psychiatry office.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
