Job Title: Registered Nurse

Supervises: Surgery Technician, Central Supply Technician, Nursing Assistant
Job Summary: Responsible for assisting with procedures/surgeries in the role of the scrub and circulating nurse and for the preparation of surgical procedures according to hospital policy and routine of surgeon.
Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
- Associate or BSN degree in nursing.
- Licensure by the Alabama State Board of Nursing.
- Experience or training in the principles and practice of surgical asepsis technique and procedures.
- Applicable knowledge of the operation of all surgical equipment and instruments.
Physical Demands: Work is of medium physical demand, frequently requiring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and walking (frequently means 75% of the time). Frequent moving and pushing of patients is required. Hearing and visual acuity.
Working Conditions: Inside protected from weather conditions. Average noise levels. Minimal exposure to infectious disease while performing job related tasks. Minimal exposure to radiation while performing job related tasks.
Essential Functions or Duties: (With or without reasonable accommodations)
Have a thorough working knowledge of the hospital’s surgery department including all policies and procedures.
Maintains tact and courtesy in dealing with patients/family and physicians.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Preserves the confidential nature of items of which he/she has knowledge.
Acts as a scrub nurse to pass instruments, sponges and suture etc. to surgeon or assistant.
Responsible for rigidly observing aseptic technique.
Sets and prepares operating room with proper equipment, instruments, sutures, sponges, and other materials necessary to perform scheduled surgical procedures.
Assists in clean-up of room cleaning, re-sterilization of instruments and equipment using proper techniques for contaminated articles.
Performs in the role of the circulating nurse.
Checks patient identification and operative checklist.
Assists in positioning of patient to ensure adequate access to operative site while ensuring patient safety and well being.
Prepares the skin of the operative site immediately before operative procedures.
Prepares operative specimens for pathology laboratory.
Provides any special equipment, instruments or materials as may be necessary during operative procedures.
Completes operative record request for laboratory test, x-ray, etc. as required.
Assists in sponge and instrument counts before, during and after surgical procedure.
Assists with dressing surgical incision.
Assists with moving patient from operating table to recovery room.
Will be required to extend duty hours when an emergency arises.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Surgery Supervisor.
May be required to maintain records when delegated by the surgery supervisor.
May be required to attend to patient in the recovery room (in accordance with hospital policy) until reacted from anesthesia and accompany to the unit or discharge.
Full Time
Day shift (6:30-3:00pm)
Monday through Friday. No call, weekends or holidays.
Current Alabama RN license, BLS, ACLS and PALS required. Minimum 1 year experience
