Bureau of School Health and Support, School Health Services, Contractual, 10 1/2 Month Positions - RN Special Needs
Under the supervision of the appropriate Program Supervisor, this is the professional health services (school nurse) component of the pupil services team. Functions as liaison between the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, one or more designated schools, the student and his/her family, and the students health care provider. Provides appropriate health services, supervision of delegated nursing tasks, counseling and resources referral to students, parents and staff at assigned schools during the school year.
General Statement of Work
This RN/SNN works one on one with a medically fragile student who requires a licensed nurse to be with the assigned student the entirety of the school day including during school bus transportation. The RN/SNN assists students by lifting up to 50 pounds, positioning, transferring, and aiding in bodily functions, administration of medication, first aid, trach suctioning, management of ventilator, gastrostomy tube feedings etc. The RN/SNN also makes nursing judgments and performs other technical procedures within the scope of his/her practice/licensure to meet the health needs of assigned students under the direct supervision of a school nurse (RN) and general supervision of a program supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities:*
Accompanies assigned student on school bus to and from school, field trips etc.
- Ensures that appropriate orders, medical supplies and equipment are present on the bus and in the school, and are in good working order, reporting any concerns to school nurse and student’s parent/guardian.
- Provides first aid (including CPR) to student as needed.
- Provides correct and complete documentation on assigned student daily and as needed.
- Demonstrates competence in fulfilling the medical needs, as well as health care action plans and emergency evacuation procedures for assigned student.
- Provides health care procedures such as catheterization, gastrostomy tube feedings, medications, tracheostomy suctioning and other non-delegatable treatments or procedures when necessary.
- Assists students with activities of daily living, i.e., toileting, positioning, feeding, transferring, etc., under supervision of school nurse (RN). These activities may include lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Assists in monitoring student’s health status and reports changes to school nurse and parent as indicated. Shares appropriate health information with school nurse.
- Provides appropriate interventions to the assigned student, including student specific modifications during school hours and while being transported on school bus.
- Assists students with special equipment required for participation in school to meet health and educational goals.
- Exercises appropriate judgment in dealing with students, parents, administrators, other employees, and the general public.
- Attends work as scheduled and demonstrates commitment to the organization.
- Maintains current Maryland licensure as RN.
- Based on assignment, other specialized duties may be assigned.
