Your Role at BSI
The Senior Mechanical Process Engineer is responsible for the mechanical engineering design of process equipment for the specialty chemical, food & beverage, consumer products, and pharmaceutical industries. Housed within the Process Engineering Department, this engineer will lead the mechanical engineering design for process equipment and mentor younger engineers to develop the same skill sets. The ideal candidate is proficient at working on project teams spread in a variety of locations.
Responsibilities and Scope
- Supervise site visits, walk downs, and site audits to gather field data on projects.
- Develop and provide discipline scope, deliverables, assumptions, and estimated budget for proposals.
- Lead engineering studies to evaluate the mechanical performance of existing process equipment.
- Prepare reports & drawings to provide recommendations on repair, replacement, and reinforcement of fixed equipment.
- Perform tank rating calculations for low pressure tanks and pressure vessels.
- Perform nozzle load calculations.
- Prepare and review specifications for pipe, insulation, and process equipment.
- Perform vendor drawing reviews and technical bid tab evaluation of vendor quotes for process equipment.
- Perform pressure loss calculations.
- Perform as Lead Engineer for process utility supply & distribution for compressed & instrument air, chilled water, cooling water, natural gas, potable water, and steam & condensate services.
- Supervise & develop plant layouts.
- Supervise & independently participate in construction support, startup, and commissioning efforts.
- Interface directly with clients, other design discipline counterparts, and project management.
- Adhere to discipline scope, schedules and costs including submission of change orders.
- Update forecast for all discipline staff on assigned projects.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and provide training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
- 10 years of experience
- Ability to visit project job sites to gather field information. Typical travel duration is up to 7 days and frequency is several times per year.
- Knowledge of ASME B31 Code, specifically B31.1 and B31.3
- Knowledge of ASME BPVC, specifically VIII Div 1 & 2
- Knowledge of API Standards, specifically 510, 570, 650, and 653
Desired Qualifications
- Professional Engineer licensure strongly preferred.
- Proficient in AMETank, COMPRESS, PIPE-FLO, and PV Elite engineering software.
- Exposure to CAESAR II.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD & Revit.
- Experience mentoring and leading technical teams.
- Good written, oral, and teleconference communication.
- Capacity to set priorities and manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to think critically and perform target value engineering.
Reporting Structure
The new Mechanical Engineer will report to David Turnquist, Process Department Manager. David holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston and a Masters in Engineering Management from Northwestern University. He resides in the Chicago office and has 17 years of engineering consultancy experience and 10 years of engineering management experience. He has a strong background in the refining, petrochemical, and specialty chemical industries.
