Job Overview:
MassDevelopment’s Devens Fire Department is accepting applications for the position(s) of Firefighter/EMT.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to fire and emergency alarms (structures, equipment, facilities, fuel, chemicals, brush).
- Drive and operate firefighting equipment and apparatus including pumpers, tankers, hose wagons, rescue trucks, and forest fire trucks.
- Perform functions involving hoses, ladders, hydrants, rescues, nozzles, and salvage.
- Conduct daily inspections and routine maintenance of fire apparatus.
- Serve as a driver-operator, positioning vehicles for optimal use.
- Operate component equipment (radios, pumps, valves, ladders).
- Perform fire protection inspections and conduct fire prevention classes.
- Engage in emergency rescues, including drowning and extrication.
- Inspect facilities for fire hazards and prepare reports on unsafe conditions.
- Maintain department property and facilities.
- Perform alarm room duties and act as a standby crew member during hazardous operations.
Competencies:
- Massachusetts EMT B certification.
- Residency within 15 miles of Devens, or the ability to move within the residency requirements within one year of employment.
- Ability to meet and maintain the qualifications and skills as defined in NFPA 1001: Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, most recent Edition - Chapter 5 Fire Fighter II.
- Hazardous material training (first responder operational level) as per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in fire science is preferred but not required.
- Administrative and computer skills, including experience in Microsoft Office.
- Physical and mental capacity to handle stressful and dangerous situations.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain professional relationships.
- Working knowledge of the town’s streets and physical layout.
- Ability to make quick decisions in emergencies and interact with individuals under stress.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish harmonious working relationships.
- Bilingual is helpful though not required for the job.
