Purpose
The role of the Director of Contemporary Worship is to plan, organize and execute contemporary worship services at First-Centenary UMC that maintain a comfortable and engaging atmosphere for the lifelong believer as well as those new to the faith. This will be accomplished through inspirational music, a cutting edge yet relatable use of technology, and crafting a worship experience that invites all who are present into a deeper relationship with Christ. A large part of this job will be musician, volunteer, and servant recruitment & development. The Director of Contemporary Worship will be an integral part of the staff at First-Centenary and work as a team with other staff members.
Duties and Responsibilities
Worship Music:
- Select, chart, and transpose worship music befitting the contemporary style while not abandoning traditional and familiar songs and hymns of the past
- Choose songs that support each respective sermon or theme of the service
- Maintain copyright documents and fees (CCLI, CVLI and other necessary subscriptions
- Ensure that proper copyright documentation is completed for all worship contemporary experiences
Manage Worship/Audio/Video Team:
- Assemble, prepare and direct a worship team(s) consisting of musicians and vocalists.
- Weekly email (or digital communication) of upcoming song details and order of service
- Weekly rehearsal
- Recruit, develop, disciple and train musicians so that the contemporary music of FCUMC continues to grow and thrive
- Recruit, develop, disciple and train individuals to run sound, lights, ProPresenter and other resources to offer the highest quality of technology used in worship
Vine Worship Planning:
- Co-lead weekly worship planning meetings in conjunction with the preaching pastor for The Vine
- Choose songs that support each respective sermon or theme of the service
- Develop a seamless order of worship while also allowing for Spirit-lead spontaneity
- Orchestrate the transitions during the service(s) and communicate those to the worship team
- Prepare the digital worship presentation
- Develop a weekly lighting plan
- Develop the ProPresenter presentation that incorporates smooth transitions, correct lyrics and copyright information and utilizes relatable videos and expressions
- Research and stay on top of new expressions of technology and how best to interact with the worshipping congregation through digital experiences.
Recruit, Train and Manage the Stage Design, Altar Design and Usher Teams:
- Recruit and work closely with the head of each team. Help establish a rotation and schedule that is inviting to those wishing to serve
- Create a system that is multipliable for other future services
- Continually be recruiting volunteers who are looking to serve in these areas
- Design and implement monthly series themes that expound up the sermon series or sermon topic
- Work with Stage & Altar teams to implement design aspects which invites the worship participants into a multi-sensory experience of worship
- Work with Altar team for the setup of regular communion service – usually on the first Sunday but to be decided in consultation with the preaching pastor
- Coordinate with lighting and live-stream personnel
- Oversee and plan special services in the church year with the Stage Design, Altar Design and Usher teams
Coordinate Opportunities with Children Ministry, Youth Ministry and Mustard Tree Ministries:
- Coordinate with Children’s Director to enhance Children’s worship experience on Sunday mornings
- Provide musical support for special events such as VBS
- Develop a youth band/choir that regularly rehearses and participates in worship 3 times per year
- Work with the Director of Mustard Tree Ministries to provide musical and technical support for their weekly worship service at FCUMC.
Enhance The Vine Worship Experience (in-person & live-stream):
- Create and utilize digital media for announcements and ministry highlight slides/videos
- Work with other media staff to utilize content for the website and social media
- Oversee all of the production value of The Vine service and create continuity between the various elements of the service such as décor, lights, cameras, music, videos, message, additional participants
- Research and establish new ways of engaging and nurturing a vibrant online worshipping community – similar but not limited to: 1) creating a Vine Spotify playlist so the congregation can learn music ahead of time
- In conjunction with the Senior Associate Pastor, discern and plan for a second contemporary worship experience
Education and Research:
- Engage in regular continuing education for Director of Contemporary Worship
- Display a knowledge and understanding of United Methodist beliefs and practices in worship and how best to communicate those in a modern context
- Develop a network of other Directors of Contemporary Worship (UMC and non-UMC) to serve as a resource for new ideas and best practices
- Develop a yearly training plan for continuing education with supervisor
Participate in the Full Life of the Church and Church Staff:
- Attendance in staff meetings
- Participation in church wide events and gatherings
- Available for church members and staff through regular office hours
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $58,000.00 - $63,000.00 per year
