POSITION SUMMARY
A Teaching Artist is a direct line staff member who work directly with young artists to develop and strengthen academic, physical, creative, and social skills while teaching the fundamentals of the art form.
In summer camp and after-school programs, Teaching Artists will lead 55-minute sessions with young artists in grades K to 5 or 6 to 8. In addition to leading sessions, Teaching Artists are allotted work hours for lesson planning, curriculum development, and preparation.
- After School Program begins on Monday, September 19th and end on Friday, June 16th.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating safe learning environments to foster social development, modeling positive behavior, and supporting participant accomplishments in line with our Creative Youth Development Framework and in accordance with the required Department of Youth and Community (DYCD) Development and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) regulations.
The Teaching Artist will be supported by a team of Education professionals including the Program Coordinator, the Associate Program Coordinator, the Education Specialist, the Associate Director of Educational Excellence, Group Leaders, and Interns/Volunteers.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
- The position is required to complete 30 hours of training, over the course of employment, that addresses topics and subject matter set forth in school-aged child care regulation 414.14 (d). These hours are in addition to session and planning hours.
- Teaching in summer camp and after-school classes. The exact schedule and number of classes vary by the art form and/or activity.
- Providing intruction in the arts and physical recreation in line with our Creative Youth Development framework.
- Creating and Implementing Curriculum and Lesson Plans in art form or activity offered in alignment with the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts (Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, etc.).
- Organizing and preparing (for 1 to 2 showcases per year) 2 to 4 culminating events and performances per year for participants to showcase their work.
QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree in an arts discipline or related area.
- 2 years of direct experience working with children under 13 years of age.
- Experience working in a school/ after school/ and/or community-based setting.
- Department of Education fingerprinting (PETS) will be required. The cost is covered by Casita Maria.
- Department of Health fingerprinting and NY State Background check will be required. The cost is covered by Casita Maria.
