Project Safety Manager
This position will be responsible for project level safety leadership for Mears Broadband. The position will require the ability to support the Company’s Total Capacity Model safety initiatives and embody our core values of safety, quality, integrity, ownership, service, and team. This role also requires the ability to ensure that our field operations follow all applicable local, state, and federal OSHA communications and construction regulations. They will be responsible to update, monitor and continue the development of company safety policies, procedures and training programs for new and existing OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory health, safety, and environmental matters.
Responsibilities:
- Perform project and job site level audits based on event trending, lagging/leading indicators and safety needs identified with Area Safety Manager or another department senior manager.
- Conduct RCA investigations of all incidents and ensure written reports are completed and submitted as required.
- Identify and recognize potential hazards associated with underground construction work, and transportation activities.
- Evaluate and assess the probability and severity of loss events and incidents which may result from actual or potential hazards. Take appropriate action to reduce or eliminate these potential hazards with mitigative controls.
- Attend and participate in daily JHA’s, provide input to effectively communicate preventive measures for potential hazards associated with scheduled tasks, and ensure everyone has received site-specific orientation.
- Prepare safety meeting agendas and safety alerts from observations made throughout crew visits.
- Conduct and/or ensure safety meetings are held per our company guidelines.
- Administer any applicable policies and training, assist in developing and administering programs, such as Company HSE policies, Emergency Response Planning, Accident Prevention Initiatives, and Regulatory Compliance training.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with leadership, project operations, and other safety teams to ensure safety strategies and programs align with corporate expectations and policies.
- Strategize with management and staff to support TCM and drive a culture that embraces safety, recognizes hazards, and takes action to minimize risk.
- Arrange for and/or accompany injured worker(s) to a pre-determined medical facility to ensure proper exchange of information with medical personnel and to accurately confirm injured worker status or condition.
- Shall ensure timely notifications for serious events are made to Area Safety Manager.
- Provide guidance about compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental laws, codes, regulations, and standards.
- Ensure field workers are suitably trained by providing worker instruction and training as required, (Ex., TCM, providing proper PPE, demonstrating safe work practices, CPR and First Aid training, etc.)
- Additional responsibilities include statistical reporting, PPE maintenance, assisting in onboarding, and conducting monthly equipment inspections.
- All other assigned responsibilities by the Area Safety Manager or other assigned department senior manager.
- Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

What is required?
- 3-5 years of relevant field safety experience
- Bachelors’ degree is required, preferably in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field
- A working knowledge of excavation and confined space is required
- Heavy Highway Construction and Pipeline Operations is preferred
- Must have a working knowledge of OSHA regulations, underground construction, and DOT regulations
- A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe PDF.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
- Regular travel is a requirement
- Must be able to stand or walk for long periods with repeated lifting (Up to 50 lbs.), kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching
