Summary:
The Educators are responsible for training clinicians on the interoperability of Dragon (front end speech recognition) and partial dictation within the EHR template and training on full dictation using MyMichigan Health's dictation system. Educators are responsible for revising and maintaining training materials for the assigned applications. The educator maintains accountability for managing software/data needs, provide technical support (responding to Dragon heat tickets), initiates vendor support when needed and provides upgrade testing and support with implementation in collaboration with lead educator. The Educators are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the electronic health record by managing the interoperability of the auditing program. The auditors review 10% of the documentation created by the healthcare clinicians using Dragon. The Educators provide process improvement to the clinicians by compiling critical and major errors that have the potential to impact document integrity and/or patient care and developing additional training strategies to facilitate excellence in their healthcare documentation. The Educators provide process improvement by performing auditing quality reviews. The Educators will work in collaboration with the Transcription Manager to facilitate meaningful interpretation of monthly Epic reports for trending purposes to report to the business and clinical application teams. Educators effectively administer the comprehensive on-the-job training program for Medical Transcriptionists. This requires an outstanding level of skill and knowledge in medical transcription practices as well as an ability to present the information in a manner conducive to learning. The end result of the training process is one in which the participants can successfully perform their major job responsibilities for both editing and auditing and make significant contributions to the goals of the department and the Medical Center. Educators are responsible for revising and maintaining training materials for the transcription applications. The Educators maintains accountability for managing transcription software/data needs and provides technical support to the transcriptionists.
Responsibilities:
(25%)* Conducts training sessions to include Dragon, partial dictation and full dictation to all providers to achieve excellence in healthcare documentation.
a. Conducts training sessions either by group or individual instruction.
b. Assists in preparation and maintenance of training materials under the direct supervision of the lead educator for use in provider orientation.
c. Incorporates teamwork to trouble shoot system issues.
d. Facilitate and validate transfer of knowledge to other educators in Transcription Services (train the trainer or super users) and provide ongoing end-user support in collaboration with lead educator.
(45%)* Evaluates effectiveness of training and ensures the integrity of the electronic health record by monitoring, measuring and reporting on documentation created by healthcare providers with the use of auditing software and applying their broad and comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, HIPAA regulations and Joint Commission standards. The educator compiles feedback for healthcare providers on critical and major errors that have the potential to impact document integrity and/or patient care, thereby eliminating repetition of errors. Standard quality scoring criteria is utilized for fair and consistent evaluation. Statistics are maintained for trending purposes. This role supports a quality assurance program, which is different than the functions performed in a clinical documentation improvement program.
(15%)* Administers the training program for medical transcriptionists. Communicates to trainees clear directions and expectations with all work types, creates a monthly training schedule that provides a fair and proportionate number of training hours for each trainee, establishes individual quarterly goals for each trainee and encourages trainees to become independent and achieve their potential; tracks individual trainee progress and reports to trainee and manager, recommends and implements changes to the training program to increase efficiency, and evaluates technical skill and knowledge of candidates eligible for advancement and makes recommendations. Keep up-to-date training manuals and word lists. Frequently verifies that reports produced by trainees are accurate. Applies broad and comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, English language rules, formatting, listening and interpretation skills, and established quality standards in the review of reports transcribed by trainees.
(15%)* Frequently performs proofreading and editing of transcribed documents per protocol to ensure that quality standards are being met. Demonstrates an understanding of the medicolegal implications and responsibilities related to the transcription of patient records to protect the patient and the business/institution on a regular basis.

Certifications and Licensures:
CHDS(Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist)/CMT or RHDS(Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist)/RMT certification through AHDI (Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity required within first 18 months of hire.
Required Education:
High school diploma or GED is required
**Preferred: Completion of either an Associate's Degree in Medical Secretarial Sciences or a certificate in Medical Transcription.
**Five (5) years in a Medical Transcriptionist position is required.

Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, as well as disease processes, pathology, and treatment techniques, surgery process and instrumentation, pharmacology, medical transcription practices and guidelines, HIPAA regulations, and Joint Commission standards.

Outstanding listening skills with the ability to understand diverse accents, dialects, and varying dictation styles; outstanding oral and written communication skills, including English usage, grammar, punctuation and style, ability to assess individual potential and skills to facilitate training, to effectively work with all clinicians and members of the transcription team in meeting objectives, to work under pressure with time constraints, thorough knowledge of hardware/software functions so as to become a resource person to all staff members, and ability to use and teach others how to use designated software.
